Overview

The practice of nursing by a Licensed Practical Nurse is defined as the performing of selected tasks and sharing of responsibility under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of an RN, perform selected tasks and activities to obtain and report information to assist the RN in the assessment, planning and evaluation of patient needs.
  • Contributes to the nursing assessment by:
    • Collecting, reporting, and recording objective and subjective data in an accurate and timely manner, including:
    • Observation about condition or change in patient status
    • Signs and symptoms that deviate from normal health status
  • Participate in the development of the patient's care plan.
  • Participate in delegating and giving direct care based on priority of needs and established goals.
  • Providing an environment conductive to safety and health.
  • Documents nursing interventions and responses to care.
  • Communicate nursing interventions and responses to care to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
  • Under the direction of the RN, perform patient-related activities, medication administration, diagnostic testing, and therapeutic treatments which contribute to safe and efficient delivery of patient care.
  • Support and participate in quality initiatives.
  • Maintain accountability for professional competency. Demonstrate knowledge and critical thinking to promote optimal patient care.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • State of CT LPN License
  • Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • CPR certified
  • CPI certified
  • Ability to read and write English with a command of verbal English
  • Ability to work well and collaboratively with other members of the health care team
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures
  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility
  • Ability to work in a time-oriented environment including exposure to all patient elements (e.g., blood borne pathogens); physical requirements include lifting and pulling of patients, pushing of stretchers, standing, and walking
  • May be exposed to environmental hazards such as anesthetic gases or elements
  • Ability to meet the care needs of the patient populations served
