Position Summary

Under the direction of the Program Director and in accordance with the Christian mission and purpose of the Great Miami Valley (GMV) YMCA Association, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for instructing safe, effective, and fun group exercise (land or water), as well as enhancing the quality, growth of the program, and retention of participants.

Essential Functions
  • Designs and prepares class routines that meet all necessary components and safety guidelines in accordance with current accepted practices of exercise physiology.
  • Offers opportunities for pre/post class member engagement to build member relations; starts and ends class on time.
  • Maintains class attendance records.
  • Instructs a minimum of two (2) classes per week (eight (8) per month) including at least one substitute per month, and appropriately secures a substitute instructor when needed.
  • Maintains equipment and keeps group exercise area clean.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Participates in continuing education training specific to individual goals and branch objectives.
  • Attends all staff meetings and YMCA training sessions as required by supervisor.
  • Maintains all certifications.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications:

    CPR, First Aid, AED required, or willingness to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire.
  • Approved Group Fitness Instructor Certification required.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to promote programs and services.
  • Enthusiastic and supportive attitude.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred.
  • Basic computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel).

  • Frequently must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally must aid or assist participants. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must have a high degree of energy, be physically fit, and have endurance to complete the workout.
  • Occasionally works with various types of fitness equipment.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate while instructing class.
