Surgical Assistant or Certified Surgical TECH

SA responsibilities include direct and indirect patient care based on established standards, collaborating with the surgeon to perform operative procedures safely and with optimal outcomes, and supporting other health care providers. The SA may provide orientation and training to new team members, participate in very complex cases, and contribute to PI projects. The SA works under the license and direct supervision of the surgeon and aligns with the hospital's mission, vision, and values.

Continuing education is required.

• Direct and indirect patient care based on established standards
• Collaborate with the surgeon during operative procedures to ensure safety and optimum outcomes
• Assist other health care providers (RNs, anesthesia staff, surgeons, etc.)
• Provide orientation/training to new team members
• Participate in very complex cases and PI projects
• Operate under the license and direct supervision of the surgeon
• Support adherence to the hospital’s mission, vision, and values; maintain continuing education

• Education:
  
  Associate of Arts Degree in Surgical Technology and completion of a Surgical Assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABSA (Required)
• Licensure:
  Not applicable
• Certification:
  Current CPR certification required
• One of the following Certifications
  
  Required:
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CAAHEP) and passing a national certification examination (CST)
  • Certification under the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Certification under the Armed Forces (military) Program
• Experience:
  
  Minimum three years of experience as a certified surgical technologist required; two years of clinical experience as a Surgical Assistant preferred
• Skills/Other:
  Ability to work with acutely ill patients, including emergency situations; ability to work independently and as part of a team; reference of collaborating physician if applicable
