Multilingual Learner Teacher, Elementary

Midland Public Schools invites applications for the Multilingual Learner Teacher (MLL) position in Elementary education. The MLL Teacher provides instruction and support to multilingual learners to help them achieve proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills using English Learner Development (ELD) standards.

Salary: $47,547 – $102,907 per year (experienced‑based salary protection available)

Building Administration and/or Continuous Improvement & State/Federal Programs Specialist

As per the current Midland City Education Association (MCEA) Agreement

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in an appropriate field; must be Properly Placed (Highly Qualified) per ESSA.
  • Certification: Michigan Teaching certificate with endorsements in ESL (NS), Bilingual Education (YA‑YT), or TESOL.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, basic computer skills, student information systems, and emerging technologies; preferred WIDA assessment knowledge.
  • Experience: Preferred experience teaching MLL students across grade levels, international experience with MLL families, and commitment to diverse student populations, including those with special needs.
  • Professional

    Competencies:

    Compassionate collaboration, knowledge of second language acquisition research, awareness of child development, public relations skills, data analysis and presentation, initiative, independent judgment, adaptability, and background check clearance.
Essential Teacher Functions
  • Complete district‑assigned trainings per deadlines; organize tasks and maintain an organized environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, verbally and in writing.
  • Work independently and with a team; facilitate instruction for MLL students toward proficiency using ELD standards.
  • Collaborate with other MLL teachers and staff for one‑on‑one, small‑group, or individual instruction.
  • Provide MLL instruction via various modalities and structures; assist with WIDA and other assessments.
  • Support classroom teachers with differentiated instruction; develop curriculum to aid English acquisition.
  • Use diverse instructional techniques; compile and maintain student profiles and data reports.
  • Maintain two‑way communication logs with classroom teachers; engage parents and families in learning.
  • Participate in professional learning activities, staff meetings, and required federal/state meetings (IEP, Section 504, etc.).
  • Attend school‑sponsored activities and coordinate with district and building administrators.
  • Physical requirements:

    lift up to 50 lbs unassisted; stand, sit, stoop, squat, bend, climb stairs; ride in a vehicle if necessary; work indoors year‑round.
ML Advisor/Coach Responsibilities
  • Main point of contact for ESL tutors.
  • Provide instructional support for classroom teachers working with ML students.
  • Monitor academic progress for students with WIDA scores ≥ 3.5 or opted out of direct support.
  • Coordinate ML family engagement events at the beginning and end of the school year.
  • Assist in evaluating ML student progress.
  • Collaborate with building and district administration.
Additional Functions
  • Travel between up to four secondary buildings daily for instruction.
  • Communicate via district‑assigned email daily as determined by supervisor.
  • Accurately complete electronic time sheets and absence reporting per deadlines.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and performance of job responsibilities.
  • Perform other responsibilities as deemed appropriate by supervisor, building administrator, or Superintendent.
