Summary
This position is responsible for registration and insurance verification in all registration areas within My Michigan Health. This position will make financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance. A primary function of this position is to perform point‑of‑service collections of co‑pay and deductible amounts from patients at the point of discharge in a diplomatic and customer‑focused manner. The role requires strong teamwork and communication skills and involves miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
For casual staff: responsible for picking up a minimum of 50% of the requests to provide admitting coverage in any of the Midland, Clare, and Gratiot locations and is responsible for registration and insurance verification of all patients who present to registration.
Responsibilities- Collect co‑pay amounts, post the payment in the system, print receipts, balance cash at the end of the shift, and provide patients with pre‑printed materials.
- Meet with the patient and/or family to explain insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies and their financial obligations upon discharge. Set up payment plans.
- Make financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate coverage and communicate available financial assistance programs for self‑pay patients.
- Access insurance eligibility websites to verify benefits and coverage; assess co‑pay and deductible amounts and document the information.
- Perform inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions.
- Obtain signatures for admission consent, Important Message from Medicare, review patient emergency contacts, clergy information, and notification of house chaplain.
- Collect patient demographics to complete a registration accurately, including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients.
- Use available tools to verify patient identification.
- Process Medical Outpatient, Invasive Radiology, OB checks and Cardiac Catheterization registrations (all are future‑dated registrations).
- Carry out special projects as assigned by supervisor.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED is required.
Experience, Training, and Skills- One year experience working with insurance and patient accounts.
- Typing skills and basic personal computer knowledge needed to enter patient information.
- Basic math proficiency and customer service skills.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups, and to convey ideas and concepts clearly.
- Maintain confidentiality with all patient information and data obtained.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices, policies, and procedures (preferred).
- Four (4) years experience working in a hospital setting with insurance, registration, and collections (preferred).
- CHAA certification (preferred).
- Competency in Microsoft® Windows.
- Willingness to participate in further learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health.
- Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment including latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
- Can move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform all job functions.
- Vision and hearing are necessary (with or without assisted devices).
- Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
- Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material – must follow blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain predictable attendance, and stay awake during shifts.
- Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
- Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must occasionally lift or carry 0–10 lbs.
