Summary: The Laboratory Aide performs technical and clerical functions under the supervision of a qualified technical employee. Duties include order entry, specimen processing, instrument preparation, delivery, storage and retrieval activities. Ethical and professional performance must align with established medical laboratory practice.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare, process and accession specimens for testing procedures (50%)
- Assist technical personnel with pre- and post-analytical duties (50%)
- Answer telephones, communicate and document; maintain department/instrument equipment; manage supplies; maintain conditions; manage sample storage; miscellaneous duties as needed for test preparation and completion
- Register specimens following all Patient Access department protocols
- Order tests in LIS/CoPath systems, process samples accurately and efficiently to ensure specimen integrity and identity
- Receive specimens in the laboratory information system and distribute to various departments for testing
- Retrieve specimens from storage for add‑on or repeat testing
- Provide for age‑specific needs of the population served per department standards and policies/procedures for patients ranging in age from birth to 100+ years
- All other duties as assigned
Required
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; GENSTUDY specialization.
Experience, Training and
Skills:
- Organization skills, manual dexterity, customer service, communication, teamwork, and computer skills
- Competency in Microsoft Windows
- Six (6) months experience in a clinical or microbiology laboratory and/or one (1) year experience handling biological specimens preferred
- Medical terminology, knowledge of laboratory policies, procedures and protocols preferred
- Knowledge of MISYS LIS, HIS and admitting policies and procedures preferred
- Job shadow in Microbiology and/or Histology may be required based on experience
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief and death
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or substitutes
- Move freely about the facility, with or without assisted device; perform job functions as outlined
- Overall vision and hearing necessary, with or without assisted device
- Must sit/stand/walk for long periods; frequent postural changes (stooping, kneeling, crouching) may be required
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, regular attendance, stay awake
- Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, etc. May involve repetition of these movements
- Physical Demand Level: Light; lift/carry 11-20 lbs. 0–33% of the workday; 10 lbs 34–66%; walk/stand/push/pull arm/leg controls
