Emergency Med Serv Dispatcher

Summary

This position answers emergency telephones, dispatches ambulances, and takes control of an emergency scene until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrive. Completes billing forms, maintains computer logs, arranges air flights, and coordinates fire and police assistance and advanced life support intercepts.

• Receives incoming emergency ambulance requests and dispatches ambulances to emergency and non‑emergency situations.
• Determines the need for police and/or fire‑rescue assistance and contacts the appropriate law enforcement agency.
• Maintains daily computer logs and statistics for both Gladwin and Midland EMS departments.
• Completes all billing forms using proper coding and obtains any additional information needed.
• Receives and schedules non‑emergency transfers and maintains adequate coverage for both Midland and Gladwin departments by shifting vehicles.
• Determines and coordinates Advanced Life Support (ALS) and helicopter intercepts.
• Takes control of the scene via telephone, giving pre‑arrival emergency medical directions to family, patient, or bystanders.

Required education:
High School Diploma or GED. Required equivalent experience: EMT‑B (EMT Basic). Preferred equivalent experience: basic life support and emergency medicine knowledge acquired through completion of a Basic EMT program and one year field experience (preferred). Experience, training, and skills: ability to work independently, interpersonal communication, map reading, mandatory TB testing annually, OSHA training annually, and capability to handle multiple tasks consistently.

Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, move freely around the facility, sit/stand/walk for long periods, and perform functions of the job as outlined. Physical demand level:
Sedentary; occasionally lift or carry 0–10 lbs.
