The Magnetic Resonance Safety Technologist will work closely with imaging leadership and the primary Medical Directors with the radiology provider groups to develop, monitor, and maintain the magnetic resonance safety program.

Responsibilities

(60%)* Coordinates care for patients on systemwide MRI Epic wait lists. Tasks include reviewing chart for active implanted medical devices (AIMD) and working with the patients implanting device clinic to ensure it has been vetted for conditional safety. They determine the appropriate scheduling time and coordinate with the My Michigan Access Center (MAC) to schedule the patient. Care is then followed to ensure that appropriate support staff is in attendance for the exam including necessary device vendor and nursing support as warranted.

(10%)* Identifies ACR compliance in MRI safety vulnerability and collaborates for solutions.

(10%)* Assists in the development and modification of MRI safety policies and procedures, ensuring they are current and effective in promoting a safe MRI environment.

(10%)* Develops and implements safety checks, inspecting MRI equipment, and ensuring that all safety measures are up to date. They work to improve the overall quality of MRI services. Creates and updates all levels of MRI safety education for staff and vendors as defined by the evolving practice of MRI safety as governed by the ACR.

(10%)* Maintains proficiency in overall MRI scanning and is able to act in that capacity when requested by imaging manager.

Certifications and Licensures

ARRT MR: ARRT MRI

Required Successful completion of Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer Program preferred.

Required Education

Education: Associates Degree

Equivalent

Experience:

Degree in Healthcare Related Field. Knowledge of Magnetic Resonance Imaging as normally acquired through completion of an associate degree in applied science and 1700 hours of clinical instruction required. Three years of clinical experience as an MRI technologist.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Call patients to remind them of upcoming appointments.

Maintain clear and complete documentation of all communications.

Specialized scheduling that is not done by the MAC, i.e. Pacemaker, Stimulator, General Anesthesia and Sedation, etc.

Develop and revise as needed, an MRI safety workflow within EPIC EMR system.

Reviews MRI related safety events that are entered into MyVoice tracking system. Reports out at quarterly MRI safety meetings.

Must be able to function effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Review electronic orders and protocols daily.

Required to have knowledge of and adhere to Departmental MRI policies and procedures.

Capable of a flexible work schedule.

Must be able to interact with patients, Hospital personnel and customers in a responsible, professional and ethical manner.

Must be flexible, reliable and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative.

Responsible for the following and adhering to Joint Commission Quality Standards which includes, but is not limited to: CPR, immunizations, training, and Infection Control.

Perform other Duties as assigned.

Experience, Training and Skills

Completion of an accredited imaging technology competency program is required. Continuing Education required by accrediting agency.

Interpersonal skills as needed to communicate successfully with groups and with individuals at all levels to relay ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
