Position: Network Engineer I

Summary

This position provides entry-level network support in maintaining My Michigan Health’s network infrastructure hardware, software, and related services. The Network Engineer I will be expected to: install and manage network communications hardware and software; monitor network performance; manage various network services and address/designation systems related to network communications. Additionally, the Network Engineer I will work with others within and outside of the IT department to assist with technical implementation and problem resolution.

Responsibilities

(60%) Provides first tier network support for the organization. Maintains, updates, remediates, and documents Layer 1 network components system wide (structured cabling, source power, environmental, UPS, power distribution, etc.).

(30%) Installs and manages network communication infrastructure components, such as routers, switches, wireless systems, communication devices, cabling, etc. Maintains network equipment and network management systems at correct software levels. Troubleshoots network communication and configuration problems.

(10%) Monitors and reports on network performance and resource utilization.

The percentages shown are approximate. Additionally, there are sub-specialties within this position (route/switch or wireless for example) that will skew duties and responsibilities in those respective directions.

Other duties and responsibilities:

Establishes, documents, communicates and monitors compliance with policies, procedures, and standards relating to the use, operation, and deployment of the network infrastructure in conformance with My Michigan standards.

Maintains various naming, designation, and address assignment systems and related servers consistent with My Michigan standards and operational requirements.

Investigates opportunities and develops proposals to take advantage of network and computing technologies that best meet needs of organization. Participates on project teams.

Participates on building and design project teams as a representative of IR department.

Participates in troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts for a broad range of IT technical issues. Consults with users, IT department, and others in organization on network issues and capabilities.

Certifications and Licensures

Required Education

Associates degree or two years completed toward a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Computer/Information Science/Business is required.

Commitment to obtain Bachelor's degree within three years of hire or transfer date, and a minimum of one (1) year of technical experience in the field is required.

Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

Other Information

Experience, training and skills:

Industry recognized certifications are preferred and recommended such as CompTIA, Cisco, and Juniper.

Physical/mental requirements and typical working conditions:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
