Summary

This position requires basic knowledge of neonatal care and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for maternity patients.

Responsibilities
  • Regularly assess patient’s/client’s needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of nursing practice (40%).
  • Provide direct resident care including medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, etc. (20%).
  • Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plan and make suggestions or participate in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care (20%).
  • Process physician/provider orders and perform physician ordered care accurately, completely, and in a timely manner. Follow up regarding medication changes and order clarifications as requested (10%).
Other Duties And Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate ability to interpret information and report pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information.
  • Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural/spiritual variables.
  • Provide education to meet individual needs and ability to learn.
  • Participate in care conferences as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet the needs of each patient.
  • Coordinate care provided by patient care technicians.
  • Demonstrate ability to organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
  • Demonstrate general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit.
  • Instruct other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.
  • Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate understanding of clinical pathways and utilize appropriately.
  • Remain calm and efficient when working in stressful situations.
  • Document in an accurate, clear, and concise way and include pertinent clinical data.
  • Share information and report significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.
  • Participate in regulatory surveys.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing competencies.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care.
  • Attend and participate in professional association activities and programs to stay current on regulations, guidelines, and professional standards.
  • Remain current on new developments by reading professional journals and attending seminars.
  • Demonstrate understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Obtain prenatal history (prenatal Labor and Delivery records) and antenatal care, gathering data and identifying risk factors.
  • Perform physical assessment.
  • Perform Leopold’s maneuvers for fetal position.
  • Assess fetal heart rate and identify maternal-fetal risk factors.
  • Palpate uterus to assess frequency, length, and quality of contractions.
  • Distinguish, report, and record normal and abnormal conditions.
  • Identify life‑threatening/emergency situations.
  • Formulate conclusions, making a diagnosis.
  • Decide when to do or not to do a vaginal examination on the laboring patient.
  • Assess and evaluate dilation and effacement of the cervix and station of presenting part via sterile vaginal examination.
  • Graph labor process based on Friedman labor curve.
  • Distinguish true labor from false labor.
  • Assess and evaluate suspected rupture of membranes.
  • Visualize pooling of amniotic fluid.
  • Use nitrazine paper to prepare slide for fern test.
  • Perform and/or assist with sterile speculum examinations.
  • Assess and document family interaction/support system.
  • Identify support person and desired birthing plan.
  • Assess effectiveness of patient’s/family’s current coping mechanisms.
  • Evaluate level of childbirth preparation.
  • Explain diet and activity orders during labor.
  • Communicate and document admission data with physician, nursing staff, family, and appropriate personnel.
  • Prioritize and deliver care based on information obtained from maternal‑fetal labor assessment of status and initial exam.
