Summary

Up to 14K sign on bonus for qualified candidates.

The medical oncology unit includes patients with a cancer diagnosis, medical step‑down patients, and general medical overflow. This position requires basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of cancer and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients on this unit. The unit works every weekend as defined by the unit.

Employees in a casual position are required to pick up shifts as outlined in the Midland Nursing – Casual Employee Policy.

Responsibilities
  • (30%) Regularly assesses patient/client needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care.
  • (30%) Provides direct patient care, including nursing assessment, medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, etc.
  • (20%) Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and patients’ condition to make suggestions and participate in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members.
  • (10%) Processes physician/provider orders and performs physician‑ordered care accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
  • (10%) Follows up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information.
  • Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural/spiritual variables.
  • Provide education to meet individual learning needs.
  • Participate in care conferences as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel.
  • Coordinate care provided by patient care technicians.
  • Organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
  • Instruct other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.
  • Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate understanding of clinical pathways and utilize them appropriately.
  • Remain calm and efficient when working in stressful situations.
  • Document accurately, clearly, and concisely, including pertinent clinical data.
  • Share information and report significant changes or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.
  • Participate in regulatory surveys, performance improvement activities, orientation, and ongoing competencies.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care.
Certifications and Licensures

BLS: Basic Life Support
DIMC: Dysrhythmia Interpretation Man (within 1 month of hire or transfer)
RN: Registered Nurse (essential)
ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (within 12 months of hire or transfer)

Required Education

Education: Associate
Preferably a Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Experience, Training and Skills

Education outline is intended for new hires or transfers new to Oncology Nursing.

  • Pass ONS Cancer Basics course within 6 months.
  • Pass ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Fundamentals of Administration course within 12 months.
  • Obtain ONS Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Certified Medical Surgical Nurse (CMSRN) within 3 years.
  • Maintain ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Fundamentals of Administration or related certification per ONS recommendations.

Demonstrate competency in preparation, administration, handling, and disposal of antineoplastic agents, management of chemotherapy spills, extravasation, and vascular access device handling.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including latex or appropriate substitutes.
  • Mobility without or with an assisted device; able to perform job functions.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk for long periods; may require frequent postural changes.
  • Occasional lifting of 21–50 lbs. or 34–66 lbs. as needed.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must follow blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
