Overview
This description details the role of a Surgical Technologist II in the Operating Room. The Surgical Technologist II understands surgical procedures, ensures supplies and equipment are available and functioning, and assists in maintaining and monitoring the sterile field. They assemble sterile instruments, anticipate the needs of the surgeon, and help track medications, sharps, instruments, and sponges to support accurate patient charges and safe procedures.
Responsibilities- (30%) Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and the ability to problem solve related to the procedure being performed. Verifies items on the physician preference card. Accountable for supplies so accurate patient charges are billed.
- (30%) Demonstrates proper use of equipment, assembling of equipment and disposables, as well as cleaning and sterilizing. Ensures all equipment, supplies and instruments are assembled correctly and in working condition for the surgical procedure.
- (30%) Maintains the sterile environment. Monitors the sterile field and recognizes breaks in technique.
- (10%) Sets up the sterile field with instruments in a timely manner. Keeps accurate account of all medications, sponges, instruments and sharps on the sterile field per policy.
- Shows a positive, courteous, and helpful attitude toward patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
- Develops and maintains good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet patient needs.
- Remains calm and efficient in stressful situations.
- Shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.
- Participates in regulatory surveys and performance improvement activities.
- Assists with orientation, ongoing competencies, education, and staff development.
- Attends and participates in professional association activities to stay current on regulations, guidelines, and professional standards of care.
- Keeps current on new developments by reading professional journals and attending seminars.
- Fulfills on-call responsibilities and extra shift coverage as needed.

Experience:
CST certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists completed within two years of hire date and maintained, or the date of signature of job description. - Graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited surgical tech program or military training;
