Emergency Room Technician (ER Tech)
Job DescriptionThe ER Tech in the Emergency Department setting is responsible for assisting the RN and Physician with patient care, carrying out delegated tasks within their scope of practice. The ER Tech must assist the licensed nursing personnel in meeting the education, physical, and psychosocial needs of patients based on their age‑specific needs. The ER Tech must involve the patient, parents, and family/significant others in the plan of care.
Respond in a timely manner to requests for information or follow‑up with physician, staff, or patient issues. The ER Tech is responsible for maintaining the standards of care in a holistic, family‑centered, and individualized manner. In performing his/her job duties, the ER Tech maintains quality and guest relations.
- Texas licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with 2 years of hospital emergency room experience required.
- Texas licensure as a Paramedic with 2 years of hospital emergency room experience required.
- Certification of MA (Certified Medical Assistant) with at least 2 years of experience in an emergency room setting.
- BLS required; ACLS and PALS preferred but not required.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Flexible and service‑oriented.
- Problem‑solving skills and the ability to think critically in an emergency setting.
- Commitment to maintaining quality, safety, and infection control standards.
- Ability to remain calm and act effectively in emergency situations.
- Perform physical activity such as heavy lifting, pushing, and/or pulling of objects over 100 lbs.
- Maintain continuing education as required for licensure.
- Carry out delegated tasks assigned by the RN and/or Physician within the EMT scope of practice.
- Follow protocols written by the medical director regarding specimen collection or other delegated tasks.
- Accurately document in the electronic medical records, maintain patient privacy, and adhere to HIPAA standards.
- Record patient lab results correctly in all laboratory logbooks.
- Report critical lab values promptly.
- Assist with stabilization and continuous treatment of patients in the emergency department.
- Support nurses in direct patient care activities.
- Stock departments and rooms daily.
- Exhibit a positive attitude toward duties and customer service.
- Ensure all chest‑pain patients receive an EKG within 10 minutes of arrival.
- Respond promptly to calls for assistance from staff and patients.
- Round on patients to provide comfort measures.
- Coordinate patient care activities with nurses.
- Keep all areas of the emergency department neat, organized, and clean; return/clean equipment after use.
- Seek opportunities to improve patient care in the department.
- Collect and process specimens in a timely manner.
- Promote a positive image of Signature Care Emergency Center in all interactions.
- Work holidays and weekends as needed.
- Perform duties in a fast‑paced emergency room.
- Lift and/or move using proper body mechanics; request assistance if needed.
- Stand, walk, sit frequently; occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Submit to random drug screenings.
