Job Summary

Medical Assistants play an important supporting role to the staff and patients of Midland Community Healthcare Services. They are expected to provide excellent customer service while performing tasks such as taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood. Medical Assistants are utilized based on their scope of practice and the scope of their abilities. Medical Assistants are evaluated and credentialed individually to determine their unique scope of abilities.

Job Duties
  • Interview patients in order to obtain medical histories, vital statistics, weight, height, blood pressure, temperature, and any additional information to place them in the medical record.
  • Review records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulation.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies in accordance with OSHA and clinic policy.
  • Participate in cross‑training opportunities in order to help other departments as needed.
  • As directed by physicians, educate patients regarding treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician’s instructions.
  • Collect blood via finger stick, collect urine, fecal, cultures, and other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for laboratory testing through the proper vendor procedure.
  • Assist physician as needed in examining and treating patients during procedures, ensuring that proper tools and supplies are available.
  • Maintain patient charts in the electronic medical record system, while ensuring accuracy of the patient record.
  • Update patient records as required.
  • Send patient correspondence as required through clinic procedure.
  • Maintain clinical supplies through the proper procurement procedure.
  • Assist in maintaining proper stock and inventory of medical supplies.
  • Assist in quality improvement, auditing, safety, and compliance measures of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Clinic Manager and Charge Nurse.
Scope of Abilities

Denotes tasks that require individual evaluation and credentialing before a Medical Assistant is deemed proficient to perform the task requested.

  • Computer & Technology Skills – The ability to type, navigate, and utilize Microsoft Office and proprietary medical software packages.
  • Time Management – The ability to prioritize tasks in order to best serve the patient and the flow of the clinic.
  • Cultural Competency – The ability to dial with people of various cultures and social status, as well as outside entities.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • 1–3 years of customer service experience preferred.
  • 1–3 years of medical assisting experience preferred.
  • No felony results on a criminal background screening.
  • Drug screen test with a negative result.
  • Bilingual.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS

BBP Class I:
This position includes routine duties that are prone to blood borne pathogen exposure. Employees will receive personal protective equipment training, blood borne pathogen standard training, and learn safety precautions. Employees in this class will be offered vaccination provided by Midland Community Healthcare Services.

Physical Demand:
Ability to interact with patients and operate office equipment for patient services. Employees will need the ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs, or more, independently as necessary. Vision abilities are required to read and verify patient information, to read information on medical records, and read information on computer systems.

Writing, speaking, and typing abilities are required in order to interview and triage the patient then document information in the electronic medical charts. Ability to pull, push, lift, and manipulate equipment and files is required. The ability to move freely about the front office and medical record areas in order to perform the job duties is required. In compliance with EEOC 29 CFR part 1630, reasonable accommodation will be made for those employees with disabilities in order to assist them in performing the job duties and demands, provided it does not constitute undue hardship upon MCHS.
