The Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney prosecutes felonies and misdemeanors in General District, JDR, and Circuit Courts. The attorney must be capable of independently managing a heavy caseload, including preparing, researching, and prosecuting assigned cases. Must be skilled at legal research and drafting responses to motions to suppress and other legal memoranda.
The attorney must be able to work closely with law enforcement personnel, as well as assist with law enforcement training, including after traditional work hours. Work involves considerable public contact and requires independent judgment, initiative, tact, and courtesy. Must be able and willing to work with other staff and victim witness advocate as a team player and be willing to perform additional, reasonable duties as requested.
Attorney serves at the pleasure of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.
Nottoway County Virginia is a lovely rural locality located within driving distance of Farmville (approx. 30 min.), Midlothian (approx. 45 min.), and Petersburg (approx. 45min.). The position does not require residency in Nottoway County.
Special Requirements :- Graduation from an accredited school of law.
- Active member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing or 2025 graduate of law school sitting for the July 2025 bar exam.
- Criminal law experience preferred.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
