Position: Water Balance Modeller (GoldSim)

Job Description

We are looking for a motivated modeller with hands‑on Gold Sim experience to support dynamic water balance modelling across mining and water resource projects. In this role, you will help develop and update models, integrate monitoring data, run scenarios, and contribute to reports that guide operational and environmental decision‑making.

You’ll work with a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, contribute to impactful water stewardship projects, and grow your technical modelling capability in a supportive and innovative environment.

The Intermediate level Gold Sim Water Balance Modeller supports the development, update, calibration, and reporting of dynamic water balance models for mining and industrial clients. The role involves working with multidisciplinary teams in water engineering, hydrology, geochemistry, permitting, and mine water management. The modeller contributes to scenario evaluation, risk assessments, forecasting, and operational decision‑making through robust simulation modelling.

Responsibilities
  • Build and update Gold Sim water balance models for operational and project planning.
  • Prepare and integrate monitoring datasets into model structures.
  • Support model calibration, verification, and scenario assessments.
  • Contribute to technical memos, WAF reporting, and client deliverables.
  • Collaborate with hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and engineering specialists.
Gold Sim Water Balance Model Development
  • Build and update dynamic water balance models using the latest Gold Sim simulation software, incorporating rainfall, evaporation, catchment runoff, groundwater recharge, upstream inflows, water reticulation, and operational processes.
  • Modify and maintain model code to reflect site changes, updated infrastructure layouts, and evolving water management practices.
Data Preparation and Integration
  • Prepare import spreadsheets and integrate updated monitoring datasets (flow data, rainfall, evaporation, operational metrics) into the Gold Sim model. Ensure data quality and consistency to support calibration and reporting workflows.
Model Calibration, Verification & Forecasting
  • Calibrate models using site monitoring data to ensure accuracy of predictive modelling outputs.
  • Conduct verification checks and apply QA/QC procedures to model behaviour and results.
  • Support annual forecasting processes, including model updates and preparation of technical memoranda documenting changes.
Scenario analysis & System Behaviour Assessment
  • Simulate system responses under dry, average, and wet climatic conditions using event‑based and sequence‑based rainfall scenarios.
  • Assess spillage frequencies, storage risks, and system vulnerabilities to support operational and regulatory decision‑making.
  • Evaluate water management strategies, including clean/dirty water separation, stormwater controls, plant water usage, and waste facility behaviour.
Reporting & Client Deliverables
  • Contribute to the preparation of water balance reports, technical memos, and Water Accounting Framework (WAF) reporting outputs. Assist in drafting clear, well‑structured model descriptions, assumptions, and rationale for internal and external stakeholders.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Work as part of multidisciplinary project teams, collaborating closely with hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, mine design, and permitting specialists.
  • Communicate model findings and implications to senior team members and clients in a clear and structured manner.
  • Support user training, model walkthroughs, or client demonstrations where needed.
Health & Safety
  • Role model standards for SHEQ performance and behaviour consistent with the company’s health, safety, environmental and quality vision and policies by influencing those around you.
  • Contribute to the identification of SHEQ risks and drive processes to achieve Zero Harm.
  • Embrace, display, and promote the company values and ensure a safe working environment is maintained at all times.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
  • 3–6 years of experience in water balance modelling, hydrological modelling, or mine water management.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or updating Gold Sim water balance models (daily or hourly time‑step).
  • Experience working with water monitoring data, flow systems, rainfall/evaporation datasets, and mine water systems.
Technical Skills
  • Intermediate proficiency in Gold Sim modelling (structures, elements, model logic, integrators, event‑based triggers, scenario management).
  • Ability to prepare and manage input datasets and interface spreadsheets.
  • Understanding of hydrological processes, stormwater generation, storage dynamics, and mine water systems.
  • Competence in analysing time‑series data and interpreting model outputs.
  • Advantageous: experience with WAF reporting, geochemical model integration, or groundwater–surface water interactions.
