This position directs and controls the operation of the Variety Department by understanding related work areas. It involves supervising department personnel, planning and ordering merchandise, and ensuring customer service, product quality, freshness, and selection.

• Supervise employees by motivating, training, participating in hiring, monitoring performance, recommending personnel actions, and scheduling according to coverage needs.
• Maintain and encourage an atmosphere of fast, friendly, courteous customer service.
• Perform customer relation duties and engage in suggestive selling techniques.
• Meet departmental projected sales and gross margin objectives.
• Ensure adequate product quantity, quality, and freshness by checking, receiving, and controlling inventory; prevent sale of out‑dated products; compute gross profit; process administrative paperwork by computer; maintain accurate department records.
• Change ends and promotion walls.
• Arrange seasonal displays for promotional activities.
• Ensure store is ready for day’s business by facing shelves, cleaning, organizing, and stocking.
• Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

• High School Diploma or equivalent

• Experience as a freight stocker, variety clerk, lead clerk, MIT or equivalent to understand variety department procedures.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with close attention to detail.
• Demonstrated initiative and self‑direction to perform multiple simultaneous tasks.
• Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide) and ability to compute weights and measures.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to establish rapport with co‑workers, supervisors, buyers, and others.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft computer operating systems in a work setting.

• Conduct visual inspections and read reports, manuals, etc.
• Forecast accurately according to demand, past sales, and expectations.
• Frequently bend, repetitively use hands, stand, walk, and lift.
• Perform duties with mental alertness involving potential hazards with respect to related procedures, equipment (e.g., knives), and work aides.

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Office machines (computer terminal, copier/scanner, 10‑key, fax machine, telephone, etc.)
• Forklift, electric pallet jack, push carts
• Box knife
