The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow‑up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process.
Qualification Requirements- Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Registered Nurse (R.N.) Licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and certified or eligible to be certified as a School Nurse by the Oklahoma State Board of Education.
- Current CPR instructor certification.
- Preferred experience in public health and/or school district health fields.
- Assists in developing school health programs.
- Conducts school programs of hearing and vision screening, scoliosis screening, and pediculosis screening as required.
- Delivers age‑appropriate health‑related educational programs including CPR, HIV‑Aids, nutrition, general health and well‑being, dental health, and growth and development to students.
- Provides a standard of care for students and staff in the event of injury or emergency illness within the RN’s scope of practice and administers first aid per established procedures.
- Implements board policy and school health guidelines on exclusion and readmission of students for infectious and contagious diseases.
- Supervises student immunization compliance, including providing resources, exemptions, and readmissions.
- Administers injections/medications following physician’s orders, including anaphylaxis medication, allergy solutions, and insulin.
- Coordinates health education with non‑district personnel such as nursing students, respiratory therapy students, and volunteers.
- Inspects, monitors, and prepares 504 plans, Individual Healthcare Plans, or physician orders for medically sensitive students.
- Performs additional duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to compose grammatically correct correspondence and memos.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; ability to interpret a variety of written, oral, diagrammatic, schedule, or blueprint instructions.
Physical DemandsRequirements include using hands to handle objects, standing, walking, climbing, stretching, and occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work EnvironmentExposure to fumes or airborne particles; work in high or precarious locations, outdoor conditions, extreme temperatures, electrical shock or vibration risks, and variable noise levels. Possible relocation to alternate work locations during health crises.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesEmployee may supervise a varying number of employees in overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned.
