Under general direction, provides direct patient care to practice patients in both office and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) settings. Responsibilities include entering patient intake and provider orders into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), requesting medical records, utilizing the pharmacy drug monitoring program as directed by providers, recording vital signs and medical history, collecting patient information, and facilitating patient flow. Complies with measures to assure that patient/customer satisfaction results are consistently maintained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in bringing patients to pre‑op, recovery and transporting for discharge.
  • Assist patients with medical forms, as necessary.
  • Exercise confidentiality in all areas, abiding by HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Accurately complete applicable paperwork; ensuring patient medical records are complete. Prepare all forms and requisitions as instructed by the provider.
  • Create and maintain a positive atmosphere of customer service, teamwork, mutual respect, professionalism and accountability.
  • Verify patient information by interviewing patient; recording medical history; confirming purpose of visit, and confirming patient .
  • Answer telephones in a professional manner and deliver messages promptly.
  • Return patient calls in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and improve current skills and knowledge by attending all relevant meetings, classes, trainings and keep certifications current.
  • Adhere to Infection Control, Safety and OSHA standards as specified by State, and Company standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of, and comply with State, Company, and any other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Assist nursing staff with obtaining and recording vital signs, pregnancy tests and glucometer checks. Verify patient history information and take detailed history when indicated. Inform nursing staff and physician of results.
  • Make frequent rounds on patients in pre‑op and recovery to provide for any other needs of the patient prior to discharge.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly safety and equipment checks.
  • Daily review upcoming cases and notify nurse of any potential issues.
  • Review schedule daily and assist with office procedures to help maintain patient flow, and accuracy of scheduled procedure.
  • Assist with inventory and order supplies for all procedures in the ASC, as directed.
  • Set up the sterile field on the Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, medications and equipment needed for procedures.
  • Position the patient for the procedures, establish the sterile field, and drape the patient for the procedures.
  • Assist providers by passing instruments and supplies to them and hold retractors (as needed) during procedures.
  • If assisting with procedures, adhere to all federal, state and nursing regulations and protocols including but not limited to patient safety procedures such as verification of patient identification prior to procedures.
  • Immediately prior to the start of any procedure in the procedure room, initiate/participate in a time‑out and ensure correct patient, procedure, site and side, and that there are no additional concerns.
  • Identify every patient with two identifiers: full name and date of birth.
  • Document this information in the Procedure Safety Checklist, including the time of the time‑out.
  • Sterilize and break down procedure room after each patient and ensure procedure room is cleaned prior to beginning of a procedure.
  • Keep rooms clean and stocked with supplies.
  • Maintain stock of medicines and supplies as necessary. Advise Office Manager when replacements are needed.
  • Sterilize and clean instruments used in examinations and/or procedures; maintain clean and hygienic environment.
  • Monitor personal and provider staff task buckets in the EMR.
  • Operate, sterilize, and maintain necessary equipment, including but not limited to the autoclave, RFA machine, and other equipment.
  • Assist the physician with use of the C‑Arm.
  • Accurately maintain daily/monthly record keeping of radiation logs.
