Summary

The Regional Literacy Coach works collaboratively with ESU 6 school districts to strengthen PreK–3 literacy instruction across the region. This role provides targeted, job-embedded support and professional development aligned to district needs, helping leadership teams implement evidence-based reading practices that improve student outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as a literacy coach for ESU 6 school districts, providing targeted, job-embedded support to teachers and administrators focused on PreK–3 literacy instruction.

Coaches educators through observations, planning, modeling, co-teaching, data conversations, and problem-solving to strengthen evidence-based reading practices.

Partners closely with district leadership teams to build local capacity and improve literacy outcomes.

Collaborates with the ESU 6 Professional Development Department to design, coordinate, and deliver high-quality professional development aligned to district needs.

Actively listens and responds to district requests, providing tailored coaching, guidance, and support to meet their specific literacy goals.

Works in close collaboration with the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE), other ESUs, NE Regional Literacy Coaches, and other statewide literacy partners to support Nebraska’s literacy initiatives.

Uses multiple data sources to help districts identify needs and guide professional development and coaching decisions, including student achievement, district needs assessments, literacy grant data, and continuous improvement data.

Supports the implementation of statewide literacy initiatives through coaching, training, communication, and documentation of work and outcomes.

Builds and maintains strong, trusting relationships with teachers, administrators, district leaders, ESU staff, and statewide partners.

Stays current in literacy research, best practices, and state and federal requirements related to the role.

Uses technology effectively for communication, documentation, organization, and instruction.

Attends required meetings, trainings, and events at local, regional, state and national levels as directed by the supervisor.

Works as a collaborative team member in support of the ESU 6 mission and vision.

Demonstrates strong communication, facilitation, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities.

Maintains flexibility to work occasional non-traditional hours.

Ability and willingness to travel frequently, including travel to school districts, meetings, conferences, and occasional overnight stays.

  • Regular and reliable on-site attendance is an essential function of this position.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • Master’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience required with some early literacy experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong understanding of evidence-based reading instruction (Science of Reading).
  • Knowledge of effective curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
  • Familiarity with statewide literacy initiatives.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Current driver's license.
