General Merchandise – What We Do

Experts of store process and efficiency who enable a consistent guest experience by ensuring product is set, in-stock, accurately priced, and signed on the sales floor. The General Merchandise and Food Sales team leads inbound, outbound, replenishment, and promotional signing processes for all General Merchandise areas. This team conducts inventory accuracy, merchandise setup and maintenance, and pricing processes. They also support fulfillment work to deliver products to guests.

The Role (General Merchandise Expert)

As a General Merchandise Expert you can gain meaningful experience and develop skills for a career. A typical day includes responsibilities such as:

• Create a welcoming guest experience while completing daily tasks.
• Assist guests with inquiries in a welcoming manner to solve their needs.
• Thank guests and acknowledge their choice to shop Target.
• Receive products, restock shelves, organize backroom, arrange merchandise, and put up promotional signs for GM areas.
• Operate power equipment to move merchandise or store fixtures if certified.
• Execute pricing changes, merchandise setup and maintenance, and inventory accuracy as directed.
• Learn how operational procedures affect inventory management, store profitability, and product availability.
• Be knowledgeable about resources, products, and services to solve guest issues and improve experiences.
• Demonstrate ethical conduct, safety, and compliance.
• Work safely; follow safety policies, report hazards, and correct where possible.
• Support guest services such as back-up cashier and digital fulfillment processes (picking/packing orders, delivering pickup orders) while complying with laws (e.g., adult beverage laws where applicable).
• All other duties based on business needs.

Additional Basics

• Accurately handle cash register operations as needed.
• Ability to climb ladders.
• Move merchandise safely; frequently lift up to 44 pounds without assistance.
• Flexible schedule (nights, weekends, holidays); reliable attendance required.
• Work in varying temperatures and conditions; duties may include Drive-Up or carryout.
• Stay mobile for the duration of a shift (shift length may vary).
