Under general direction, the Public Works Supervisor assigned to the Parks Division provides leadership and direction in maintaining and enhancing the City’s parks, landscapes, and athletic fields. This position plans, schedules, assigns, and supervises the work of a dedicated crew of seven (7) full-time Maintenance Workers who help keep the City’s outdoor spaces safe, beautiful, and sustainable.
The Supervisor oversees the daily and seasonal maintenance of high-quality athletic fields, irrigation systems, and park facilities, ensuring they meet the needs of both recreational users and organized sports programs. This includes planning and managing turf renovation, field preparation, irrigation repair and upgrades, and plumbing maintenance throughout the City’s parks and landscaped areas.
Serving as the City Arborist
, this individual plays a vital role in caring for public trees and vegetation, working closely with the Fire Department, community groups, and other departments to implement the City’s tree maintenance and vegetation management programs.
Other key responsibilities include overseeing and maintaining the City’s gateway areas, medians, demonstration gardens, and other high‑visibility landscape features; ensuring the effective operation of irrigation and drainage systems; and supporting the preservation and enhancement of the City’s cherished Steps, Lanes, and Paths network.
As a working supervisor, this position combines hands‑on technical knowledge with strong leadership and team‑building skills. The Supervisor is responsible for coaching, mentoring, and developing staff; fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth; and ensuring high standards of performance and service within the Parks Division.
Essential Duties and responsibilities- Plan, schedule, coordinate, assign and supervise the work of field crews and contractors engaged in parks, fields, golf course, landscapes, trees, steps, lanes and paths, and special projects work.
- Ensure the safe use of equipment and material and the use of safe working methods, techniques, and procedures.
- Train, evaluate, and discipline assigned staff.
- Receive and respond to emergency calls and internal and external service requests.
- Administer Tree Management Plans, inspect and evaluate condition of City trees and direct work as needed.
- Monitor, inspect, and review work in progress and upon completion by City crews and contractors.
- Exercise control of annual Parks operating budget and assist in planning, preparation and administration of the annual budget.
- Order necessary authorized materials and recommend capital purchases.
- Maintain a variety of records and prepare reports.
- Assist/advise Parks and Recreation Commission and Tree Committee.
- Recommend Capital Improvement Projects.
- Oversee the construction of Capital Improvement Projects.
- Coordinate and manage volunteer projects.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will offer a balanced skill set with proven experience in timely decision‑making, team development and training, in-depth knowledge of municipal grounds and landscape maintenance, as well as the creativity to innovate and dream up new projects.
They should have a minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape maintenance, including at least three (3) years at a supervisory level. High school diploma or equivalent and specialized training or class work in horticulture, landscaping, landscape architecture, turf management or related. Highly desirable: college degree in horticulture, parks management, turf management or related field.
