About MillbraeThe City of Millbrae is located in San Mateo County on the northern San Francisco Peninsula, immediately west of the San Francisco International Airport. The City covers 3.25 square miles primarily between the Bayshore (101) and Junipero Serra (280) Freeways. Millbrae is a suburban, residential community that is essentially built out with 70% of the City's 8,200 dwelling units comprised of single-family units.
Millbrae retains its "small town" feel while its economy continues to expand, as it remains linked to the growing airport and related tourism. The City planned a major downtown revitalization with the arrival of the new San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station. The City Council appoints the City Manager who serves as the City's chief executive officer. Millbrae is a general law city. Department Heads are appointed by the City Manager. The City is organized into the following departments, which provide direct City services:
Community Development, Finance, Administration, Administrative Services, Recreation, and Public Works. Administration includes the executive and legislative offices as well as legal services. Administrative Services includes Human Resources and the City Clerk. The City contracts with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office and Central County Fire for police and fire services. DEFINITIONUnder general supervision, inspects a variety of construction projects to ensure conformance with contract plans, specifications, standards, laws, and regulations; performs work related to plan checking, issuing permits, providing construction recommendations, and other technical functions; and performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSPublic Works Construction Inspector is a specialized classification that is responsible for a variety of duties related to the inspection of construction projects.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVEDReceives general supervision from higher-level Public Works Department staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe duties listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all of the duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Provides field inspection of public and private improvement projects that involve grading, underground utilities, encroachments, curbs, gutters, sidewalk, paving, facilities, structures, and park construction; ensures conformance to approved plans, specifications, and schedules; stipulates correction of defective work; recommends approval of acceptable work;
- Performs technical functions, such as plan checking, issuing permits, and answering construction questions, preparing checklists, guidelines and specifications;
- Ensures that all required tests, operations, measurements, and inspections are scheduled, ordered, and satisfactorily completed; ensures compliance with applicable safety regulations;
- Reviews submittals and takes samples of materials for examination or testing by laboratories; records amounts of materials used and work performed, and interprets results of soils, materials, and operational tests, including asphalt compliance, concrete strength, and soil compaction test reports;
- Inspects traffic control placed within the City right-of-way and ensures compliance with applicable safety regulations;
- Writes letters to contractors, developers, and homeowners regarding inspections; responds to inquiries and requests for assistance in person, in writing and over the phone;
- Performs contract administration duties, including preparation of daily construction reports, weekly statements of working days, change orders, progress payments, general correspondence, and checking of payroll records, material submittals, and certificates of compliance;
- Assists in investigating and resolving disputes and/or problems, and responds to complaints from the public;
