Responsibilities- Treat each patient and customer with compassion and care.
- Perform basic to intermediate nursing care tasks, patient monitoring, and treatments.
- Use knowledge of common diseases, physical assessment, and monitoring parameters to triage patients accurately.
- Administer subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications; be aware of potential adverse effects.
- Set up, monitor, and administer intravenous fluid therapy, including constant rate infusions and blood transfusion therapy.
- Contribute to incoming outpatient care and ongoing inpatient care.
- Participate in patient rounds for continuity of care.
- Be trained to perform all aspects of CPR as a RECOVER Certified Rescuer.
- Collect samples and perform diagnostic tests, including in‑house and point‑of‑care tests and imaging.
- Assist in setting up, monitoring sedation, and surgical anesthesia under LVT or DVM supervision.
- Perform nursing tasks such as placing and maintaining urinary catheters and nasal oxygen tubes.
- Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot oxygen cages and other oxygen administration techniques.
- Work alongside licensed veterinary technicians as a vital member of the nursing care team.
- Obtain additional training along guided growth pathways offering roles such as veterinary technician credentialing, trainer, community outreach, and leadership.
Veterinary Assistants can also, where permitted by law, administer and monitor patients under general anesthesia, perform advanced vascular access techniques, conduct advanced diagnostic procedures, and participate in treatment planning.
