The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works supports the backbone of our provincial highway infrastructure. We are located at Miller Lake, the central Fleet Services hub of the province. At Miller Lake, we are pivotal in ensuring the equipment used to maintain, repair, and build Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, and 4,100 bridges, is always ready to go.

About Our OpportunityUnder the general direction of the Stockroom Supervisor the Supply Tech 1 initiates, coordinates the procuring of stock for the fleet inventory of the Central Mechanical Branch operation at Miller Lake. The supply Tech 1 also informs and supports the Provincial Inventory Coordinator in maintaining sound procedures for the procurement of stock flow for all fleet inventories throughout the province.
Primary AccountabilitiesDetermines time, cost and quality of stock items to maintain the servicing of the departments fleet within a timely manner while taking into consideration the carry costs and storage of inventory. Verifies changes to minimum and maximum reorder points to achieve optimum inventory stock.
Communicates with parts and supply representatives to ensure best pricing and service from individual vendors. Where standing offers are not in place the Supply Tech 1 builds relationships with preferred vendors to achieve best value as it applies to needed goods and services.
Receives and answers all question pertaining to suppliers requesting clarification to purchase orders and follows up on back orders. Confers with fleet personnel in establishing specifications for stock parts and with the procurement agency for updates to contracts and methods of procuring materials.
Responsible for preparing provincial surveys for all divisions pertaining to the procurement of winter materials and calculates stock requirements from the survey data.
Qualifications And ExperienceHigh School completion plus four (4) years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
A good knowledge of computerized inventory management/control and procurement; materials, tools, equipment and trade terminology used in building maintenance and construction. The ideal candidate will possess problem solving and decision making skills, planning and organizational skills, strong public relations skills and an understanding of the principles of customer service. Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise correspondence is necessary.
They must be able to work within financial constraints. Training or experience using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
A knowledge of SAP Materials Management and Plant Maintenance modules; government procurement policy and tendering procedures; ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings and to develop a supply list from the same; safety training in First Aid certification and CPR, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Confined Space Awareness would be considered assets.
You may be occasionally asked to provide training and guidance to provincial government staff, public groups, and associations regarding environmental issues and policies which would include the development of learning materials.
