Aquatics & Safety - Swim Instructor (Millington YMCA)

Part-time position with the Millington YMCA.

The Aquatics & Safety - Swim Instructor supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The part-time Swim Instructor is responsible for maintaining constant supervision of students to ensure safety, creating positive, nurturing relationships with students, and building cooperative relationships with parents and caregivers. The role promotes the potential of all students and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.

• Provides swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities.
• Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
• Helps to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participants.
• Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practices.
• Maintains constant supervision of students, identifies students who need assistance, and supports students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
• Maintains positive relationships with parents and caregivers and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
• Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

• Minimum age of 16.
• Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration certifications and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent or ability to obtain certification.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize students who may need assistance.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous and dangerous situations.
• Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water and tread water.
• Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of students, parents and caregivers, and other YMCA staff and volunteers.

Work schedules may vary per the Y’s hours of operation. Typical hours:
Mon – Fri, 5:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.;
Sat, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.;
Sun, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

• Lift equipment and assist small to average-size children.
• Remain in the pool area at all times.
• Remain alert in a warm environment (80 degrees or higher).
• Recognize distress signals and support participants in the water.
• Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods; ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.

Salary: $12.50 - $13.00 per hour.
