Tutor – SETPD & Functional Skills (Milton Keynes)

Salary:
From £24,246 FTE Salary is negotiable and based on experience

Milton Keynes is getting a new kind of education centre — and we’re looking for the right people to help shape it. With a 10 year history, this is New Meaning Training’s seventh centre to open. This alternative further education setting or college is a supportive, person-centred space for young people aged 15–25 who haven’t thrived in traditional settings. If you’re a youth worker, teaching assistant, or supportive professional who’s passionate about helping young people build confidence, skills, and independence, this role could be a great new stepping stone for you.

We’re recruiting a Functional Skills & SETPD Tutor to help learners take those first steps into adulthood — often starting from a place of low confidence, anxiety, or disengagement. Many will have EHCPs, autism, ADHD, or social‑emotional needs. What they need is someone who’ll meet them where they are, believe in them, and walk beside them on their journey.

You’ll be delivering functional English and Maths (Entry Level 1–Level
2) alongside life‑skills sessions under our Supported Employment, Training and Personal Development (SETPD) programme. That might mean helping a learner write their first CV, travel independently, or gain the confidence to speak in a group. This isn’t just a teaching job — it’s a chance to help shape the offer in Milton Keynes. If that excites you, we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry 1–Level
    2) in a creative and supportive way
  • Plan and lead SETPD sessions covering topics such as emotional wellbeing, communication, independence, digital skills, budgeting, and workplace preparation
  • Create engaging, differentiated sessions for small groups of learners, tailoring your approach to a wide range of needs and learning styles
  • Work collaboratively with other tutors and support staff to design and deliver schemes of work and session plans
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with learners using trauma‑informed and relational approaches
  • Track and record learner progress and engagement against EHCP and programme goals
  • Contribute to learner onboarding, induction, and regular reviews
  • Support learner progression across flexible pathways (e.g., building confidence to transition from small group settings to more structured classroom or work environments)
  • Travel between Milton Keynes, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, and Thomley centres may be required to support delivery.
About Us

New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15–25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, around 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire joined one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.

Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with the most recent new centres opening in September 2025.

We have a range of programmes in Milton Keynes and even more in our other 3 centres in Buckinghamshire (High Wycombe, Aylesbury and Thomley). These include Construction Multiskills, Creative Art & Design and Boost Work skills. All programmes incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well‑rounded approach. We also provide a ‘Transition Support’ programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.

NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma‑Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
