Overview
The Treasurer maintains an overview of the charity’s financial affairs and works closely with the Director and Finance Manager to support robust financial planning and oversight. The role includes contributing to the preparation and presentation of the annual budget and management accounts, and ensuring that the Board of Trustees understands the charity’s financial position, key risks and the financial implications of strategic decisions.
The Treasurer has a particular responsibility for oversight of financial controls, reserves, risk management and statutory reporting, and for ensuring the charity meets its legal and regulatory obligations. They chair the Finance Sub-Committee and play a key role in supporting good governance and long-term financial sustainability.
Citizens Advice Milton Keynes is a well-established local charity delivering multiple commissioned services, employing paid staff and managing an annual turnover of c.£1m, rising to approximately £1.2m in the current year.
The Treasurer is a trustee, and our trustees are volunteers. Being a member of our Board can bring personal satisfaction as well as the opportunity to apply professional expertise at Board level, strengthen governance and strategic skills, and contribute directly to the sustainability of an essential local service.
All trustees are expected to:
- Commit around 10 hours per month (flexible), including attending 5 Board meetings per year, with the Treasurer chairing around 5 Finance Sub-Committee meetings per year.
- Make an active contribution to the Board of Trustees in providing clear strategic direction for Citizens Advice Milton Keynes.
- Use their specific skills, knowledge and experience to support informed decision-making and effective oversight.
- Act as the Board’s lead trustee for finance, providing assurance and constructive challenge on financial matters and supporting strong governance.
This role would particularly suit a qualified accountant or finance professional seeking to gain or deepen trustee and Board-level experience in a well-governed, growing charity.
