Overview
As a member of the Offender Management in Custody (OMIC) team, you will work under a loan agreement. At the conclusion of the loan period, you may transition to a Probation Delivery Unit.
Loans are typically for 2 to 3 years, with the possibility of extension to 5 years depending on business needs.
Key Responsibilities- Assess and support people on probation before and after sentencing.
- Implement sentencing decisions and manage offenders.
- Produce regular reports and maintain accurate case records.
- Provide case‑management support to a full range of people on probation, applying service procedures and practice directions that underpin professional judgement.
You must have the right to work in the UK and satisfy Civil Service nationality rules.
In accordance with current immigration rules, this role is not eligible for a new Skilled Worker visa. From 22 July 2025, the government introduced changes to the eligibility criteria for Skilled Worker visas. HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) cannot consider sponsoring candidates unless they have held a Skilled Worker visa prior to those changes.
Applicants who have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously should disclose this during pre‑employment checks to have eligibility assessed under the transitional provisions. Those who have not held such a visa must consider alternative routes to maintain the legal right to live and work in the UK.
Compensation & Pay ProgressionStarting salary: £26,475. The Probation Service offers annual pay progression through a Competency Based Framework (CBF), enabling pay increases as competence grows. New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band. Pay band ranges are raised annually in line with Civil Service pay guidance.
