Job Purpose

To provide a high-quality decontamination, inspection, sterilisation, and distribution service for reusable medical devices in accordance with national standards, including NHS England guidelines.

The post holder will ensure that all instruments and equipment are processed safely and efficiently to support clinical services and patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive, sort, and disassemble used medical instruments.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment using automated washer‑disinfectors and manual processes.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage.
  • Assemble and pack instrument sets according to specification sheets.
  • Operate sterilisation equipment (e.g., autoclaves) following validated procedures.
  • Release sterilised loads in line with department protocols and quality standards.
Quality & Compliance
  • Complete accurate documentation and tracking using instrument management systems.
  • Report equipment faults, damaged instruments, or process failures immediately.
  • Maintain traceability of instruments at all times.
  • Follow infection prevention and control policies.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Handle contaminated instruments safely in accordance with COSHH regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and organised working environment.
Person Specification Essential
  • Good standard of general education (GCSEs or equivalent).
  • Ability to follow written procedures and work accurately.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to undertake further training.
Desirable
  • Experience working in a healthcare or sterile services environment.
  • Knowledge of decontamination processes.
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Decontamination or equivalent qualification.
Working Conditions
  • Work in a controlled decontamination environment.
  • Exposure to contaminated medical devices.
  • Requirement to stand for long periods.
  • Shift work may be required, including evenings and weekends.
