Development Underwriter – Care

The opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Development Underwriter specialising in the Care Sector to join a growing UK Commercial Insurance team.

This is a key role supporting the continued growth and development of a specialist Care Sector portfolio. You'll combine strong technical underwriting expertise with your ability to build trusted broker relationships, identify new opportunities and deliver sustainable, profitable growth.

You'll have the opportunity to make a real impact in a specialist market, working closely with underwriting, distribution, claims, actuarial and risk colleagues to develop propositions and deliver excellent outcomes for brokers and their customers.

• Underwrite complex Care Sector risks, including charitable organisations, within agreed underwriting authorities and guidelines.
• Develop and convert new business opportunities, delivering against agreed financial and growth targets.
• Build strong, long-term relationships with brokers and distribution partners, becoming a trusted trading partner.
• Maintain a visible presence across your broker panel, including regular broker visits and market engagement.
• Identify and develop new trading opportunities within your region and broker portfolio.
• Manage your pipeline and broker activity effectively through CRM and underwriting systems.
• Work collaboratively with internal teams including Claims, Risk, Actuarial, Distribution and Operations.
• Support and mentor colleagues, sharing technical knowledge and promoting high underwriting standards.
• Represent the business at broker meetings, industry events and market forums.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the Care Sector proposition and wider growth strategy.

We're looking for an experienced commercial underwriter with strong technical knowledge of the Care Sector and a genuine appetite for business development and relationship management.

• 5+ years' experience underwriting Care within a commercial insurance environment.
• Strong technical underwriting and portfolio management experience.
• A proven track record of developing broker relationships and generating new business.
• Excellent trading, negotiation and commercial decision‑making skills.
• The ability to identify opportunities and turn them into sustainable trading outcomes.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, both internally and externally.
• Experience of mentoring, coaching or supporting colleagues.
• A resilient, adaptable and entrepreneurial approach.
• Professional insurance qualifications such as Dip CII or ACII, or a commitment to working towards them.
