An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP) to join our multi-disciplinary Neonatal Team at Milton Keynes University Hospital.
We care for babies born from 27 weeks gestation, providing a developmentally supportive environment in which our most vulnerable patients can grow and thrive. Our unit forms part of the Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal Operational Delivery Network and works collaboratively with the Bedford, Luton & Milton Keynes Local Maternity & Neonatal System (BLMK LMNS) to deliver excellent standards of neonatal care.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities- Lead in the resuscitation of the newborn, using advanced skills evaluating progress and making further decisions regarding management.
- Lead the admission of sick and preterm infants to the Neonatal Unit, identifying individualised management plans.
- Be responsible for initiating treatment, including drug therapy.
- Order appropriate investigations to inform treatment plans, acting on the results appropriately.
- Identify the need for and undertake advanced clinical skills, e.g. UAC, UVC, intubation, long lines and chest drains.
- Maintain own professional development to ensure that all clinical practice is based on current knowledge and relevant research.
- Demonstrate competency in all aspects of the ANNP role, ensuring a record of skills is maintained and that they are deemed competent by the Lead Neonatal Clinician.
- Develop and maintain own personal and professional profile.
- Demonstrate an understanding of research methodology.
- Disseminate research findings and identify recommendations for clinical practice.
- Identify & participate in agreed research within the Neonatal Unit.
- Develop, write, and implement clinical guidelines and policies, relevant to nursing and medical staff.
- Identify areas of practice requiring development, undertake audit, implement change of practice where appropriate and evaluate outcomes.
- Participate in the directorate clinical governance meetings as appropriate.
- Liaise with medical and maternity/nursing colleagues on a daily basis, working in partnership to ensure efficient and effective coordination of the Neonatal Unit is achieved.
- Attend and participate in departmental meetings to offer expertise in clinical practice, education and research.
- Contribute or be involved in staff recruitment and retention initiatives and yearly appraisals of any trainee ANNP.
The post holder will be required to work within agreed protocols and guidelines which include neonatal resuscitation, initiation of treatment including mechanical ventilation, ordering and administration of drugs and intravenous fluids. The post holder will provide expert advice to junior medical and nursing/midwifery staff, parents/carers in respect of the management of their sick baby. ANNPs will be required to support the nursing team to improve clinical effectiveness and support delivery of quality care.
