Watling Street Practice – Practice Nurse (with interest in Diabetes)
Job SummaryA fantastic opportunity to join a high performing GP surgery. We are looking for a Practice Nurse with an interest in diabetes to join our team. Experience in diabetes is not required, but a strong willingness to learn is essential.
Hours,Salary and Benefits
- £21.00–£22.56 per hour (depending on experience)
- Part‑time – 18 to 21 hours per week on a fixed rota over 3 days

Work from the Watling Street Practice surgery in Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes.
The successful candidate will be compassionate, dedicated, and possess excellent communication skills and a strong sense of empathy, able to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
Practice Nursing Responsibilities and Duties- Provide nursing services to patients, including treatment, screening, advice and minor therapeutic procedures.
- Run clinics for vaccinations, cervical cytology, contraception reviews and wound care including removal of sutures and leg ulcers.
- Perform diagnostic tests such as blood glucose monitoring and urine analysis.
- Take and dispatch laboratory specimens safely.
- Provide treatment for cuts, bruises, dressings of wounds and leg ulcers.
- Administer immunisations for all ages and diseases, knowing contraindications and side effects.
- Provide telephone advice and occasional home visits within competence.
- Maintain a positive, patient‑focused culture and support the practice team.
- Run special diabetic clinics for patients.
- Give dietary and lifestyle advice and develop individual management plans.
- Assist in formulation of diabetic protocols and monitor practice performance.
- Educate patients on use of oral hypoglycaemias and insulin, including administration and dose adjustment.
- Identify high‑risk patients and liaise with the community diabetic team.
- Manage diabetic emergencies and provide health education advice.
- Provide nursing treatments within agreed protocols with GPs.
- Conduct health screenings and refer to GPs as necessary.
- Advise on general health care and minor ailments, referring to GPs when appropriate.
- Perform routine tasks as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.
- Follow clinical protocols and refer to senior nurses or GPs when needed.
- Strict confidentiality and adherence to professional standards.
- Judgment, resourcefulness, and common sense.
- Commitment to professional development and staying updated with nursing practice.
- Ensure Health and Safety and Infection Control requirements are met.
- Efficient use of practice and NHS resources.
- Awareness of own limitations and experience.
- Work within the UKCC Code of Conduct and professional scope.
- Maintain a written professional development plan and up‑to‑date portfolio for UKCC registration.
- Practice nursing experience.
- Interest in diabetes nursing and willingness to learn.
- Strong knowledge of infection control.
- Experience with diabetes management.
- Experience with long‑term conditions.
- Membership of the NMC (essential).
- Diploma in Improving Diabetes Care (Warwick) or equivalent.
- PIT‑stop or Merit injectables courses.
- Being a qualified prescriber would be advantageous but not essential.
Applicants must have current UK professional registration (NMC or equivalent).
