The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) seeks an innovative academic leader to serve as Chairperson of the Mathematics Department. The position is a 12-month appointment reporting to the Executive Vice President of Academics, with an anticipated start date in August 2026.

The Chairperson will lead the Mathematics Department at MSOE in achieving its vision to empower students with critical mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills needed for success in their academic studies and future careers. The department provides students in MSOE's STEM-oriented degree programs with foundational material essential to their fields of study. The department also houses MSOE's Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science program.

The ideal candidate for Department Chairperson of Mathematics will have extensive teaching experience and pedagogical knowledge in mathematics, as well as academic leadership experience. The department seeks a collaborative leader capable of working with a diverse team to promote student success amid the current challenges in mathematics education and the changing landscape of higher ed.

The successful candidate will:

  • Empower the department's faculty and staff through encouragement and support by recognizing the value of each individual's contributions in achieving the goals of the department
  • Embrace the MSOE mission, vision and values as well as the department's history/legacy as a strong student-centered, undergraduate-focused institution with an application-oriented curriculum
  • Collaborate in a team environment with faculty, program directors and staff, both inside and outside of the department
  • Enjoy creative problem solving
  • Work with the department's stakeholders including Chairpersons and Program Directors across the institution to set a long-term strategic vision for the department
  • Show willingness to make difficult decisions, balanced with listening, empathy, self-awareness, and value-driven decision making
  • Work with University Advancement to support philanthropic initiatives of the department and the institution
  • Promote and support the Actuarial Science program
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership for the ongoing improvement of program curricula, resources necessary for effective instruction, and make related recommendations to the chief academic officer.
  • Recruit, appoint, evaluate, and plan professional development for faculty in the academic department.
  • Determine the teaching and departmental assignments for the members of the department each term.
  • Prepare an annual budget request for submission to the chief academic officer, manage budget and approve expenditures.
  • Consult with the department faculty on teaching methodology, course syllabi documentation, and textbook selection, as appropriate.
  • Represent the department on university-level committees and within the Academic Leadership Team.
  • Prepare annual performance evaluations for faculty and staff within the department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned Doctorate in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics education, or statistics.
  • A record of teaching, service, and scholarly activity warranting appointment at the rank of associate or full professor at MSOE.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills in an academic environment.
  • Outstanding organizational, written, communication, and interpersonal skills.
