Certified. Founded in 2000, the Milwaukee Academy of Science is a K4-12 independent charter school serving nearly one thousand scholars in downtown Milwaukee. The mission of MAS is to graduate students prepared to compete successfully at the post‑secondary level. African American students comprise 99% of the student body and over 95% qualify for free or reduced meals. MAS maintains the expectation that all students should be on grade level and proficient on state assessments.
Teachers are expected to plan and prepare rigorous lessons and to communicate and collaborate with staff and parents. MAS is seeking a Special Education Teacher for grades 9‑12. Candidates must be certified by the Department of Public Instruction and preferably have urban education teaching experience.
I. Accountability Objectives The teacher is responsible for supporting general educators, providing modifications, and delivering direct instruction to special education students. The teacher will implement instructional programs and Individual Education Plans (IEPs) designed to meet each student’s unique needs. All tasks will be carried out as directed by the immediate supervisor and in compliance with Board policies, contractual obligations, administrative rules, and all relevant laws and regulations.
II. Position Characteristics Length of contract:
First‑Year Teachers – 197 days;
Returning Teachers – 195 days.
III. Position Relationships
- Reports to:
Director of Special Education - Coordinates with:
Building Principal, Special Education Director, teachers, central office personnel, other school staff, program support teachers, parents/families - Type of coordination:
Curricular, programmatic, assessment, conferences, IEP development and reporting, and data analysis for program accountability.
IV. Position Qualifications Required qualifications:
Wisconsin Teaching Certification in Special Education.
V. Position Responsibilities
- Understand the educational philosophy of the school and carry out Board policies.
- Consult and correspond with parents, staff, and administration via phone, email, and written communications.
- Participate in parent conferences and IEP meetings as needed.
- Direct and evaluate students’ learning experiences in the classroom and in assigned co‑curricular activities.
- Provide guidance to promote students’ welfare and educational development.
- Use effective teaching techniques to foster optimal student learning.
- Plan and deliver instruction based on the school curriculum and each student’s individual needs, including necessary modifications and adaptations.
- Develop a variety of instructional activities to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students, preferably in inclusive settings.
- Establish and maintain an orderly, inclusive classroom environment conducive to optimal learning.
- Participate as an evaluator in the special education referral and assessment process when called upon.
- Ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate instruction and remedial support for health, attitude, and learning concerns in collaboration with general classroom staff.
- Maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and parents to promote effective communication.
