Job Summary

The OSP Engineering Technician II is responsible for regularly inspecting and verifying outside plant fiber networks, including construction elements such as conduit, fiber, splice domes, and cabinets. The technician may work in central office environments. You share responsibility with local contractors for safety and quality to ensure projects meet municipality and client requirements.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Commitment to working and leading safely, in compliance with OSHA regulations and company policies.
  • Perform site visits to document field conditions for new sites and site modification projects.
  • Liaise with contractors for restoration efforts.
  • Conduct site or pole surveys; use OSP field equipment to gather utility pole information.
  • Work with local municipalities for permitting acquisition and attend meetings in person as required.
  • Prepare project documentation and maps; aid in research and acquisition of permits and right-of-way documentation.
  • Develop working relationships and communicate with Management, Project Managers, Foreman, and peers to address issues and achieve company goals.
  • Act as a technical resource for field support, customers, sales, and operations; assist in addressing questions and problems.
  • Communicate project progress to customers where applicable.
  • Visit customer sites to gather OSP survey information and evaluate requirements.
  • Engage with customer engineering and project management teams via email/phone and occasional in-person meetings.
  • Provide field investigations of aerial and underground construction projects.
  • Attend onsite meetings with stakeholders to explain construction procedures and cable routing as necessary.
  • Perform field verifications of existing plant to provide accurate pickup points for new development and extensions.
  • All other duties assigned by manager.
Travel / Shift Requirements
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours; overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Some out-of-town and overnight travel may be required.
Physical Demands
  • Office work is in a normal environment; field work may expose you to outdoor weather.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and required programs.
  • Occasional moving of items up to 25 pounds.
  • Field work may require climbing ladders, opening locks, gates, and doors.
Skills And Abilities

Required
  • Working knowledge of GPS principles and ability to use GPS hardware/software, laser rangefinders, measuring tools, and surveying equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, engineering documents, and construction drawings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to write reports and engineering documents.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with vendors, customers, permitting authorities, and colleagues.
  • Problem solving in diverse scenarios with limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read construction maps to build fiber networks.
  • Customer service orientation; comfort with hand/power tools and ladders.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to review work and convey required corrections; collaborate with engineering and project management teams.
  • Ability to set priorities and work in a fast-paced environment; multi-task across projects.
  • Ability to sketch site layouts and take measurements.
Education And Experience Required
  • High School Diploma
  • 2-3 years of telecom experience preferred, or 2-4 years of utility construction experience; construction or OSP experience preferred.
  • Telecommunications and/or cable experience preferred; FTTH networks experience preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
