Job Summary

The Tooling Engineering Intern will work directly with Tooling Engineers and cross-functional partners to support active injection mold development projects. The intern will learn how product designs are converted into reliable, production-ready tooling and how engineering decisions affect mold construction, project cost, lead time, part quality, maintainability, and molding cycle time.

This role combines technical learning with meaningful project responsibility. The intern will participate in mold design reviews, support technical purchasing and supplier coordination activities, transfer and control engineering files, track project actions, and document patterns and lessons learned for use on future tooling programs. This will be achieved while maintaining Hellermann Tyton's Quality and EHS certifications by supporting all corporate policies, procedures, work instructions and required documentation.

Internship Project Focus

  • Tooling Project Lifecycle & Lessons Learned Initiative
    • Under the guidance of the Tooling Engineering team, the intern will support one or more active mold development projects and document the engineering decisions, cross-functional requirements, tooling challenges, and successful practices observed throughout the summer.
  • Primary Outcome
    • A concise Tooling Lessons Learned Report with practical recommendations for future part design, mold design, project execution, and cycle-time improvement

Success in this role will require

  • Project Execution & Documentation
    • Participate in active mold development projects from project kickoff through design, build, trial, and validation activities.
    • Assist with preparation and release of technical purchase order documentation and supporting technical requirements.
    • Coordinate secure transfer, organization, and revision control of part models, mold designs, drawings, specifications, and related project files.
    • Track schedules, supplier deliverables, open technical actions, decisions, and project risks.
    • Attend supplier reviews, mold design reviews, project meetings, and mold trial discussions
  • Tooling Engineering Exposure
    • Learn how injection molds are designed and built, including the purpose of mold bases, cavity and core construction, runner and gating systems, cooling, venting, ejection, actions, hot runner systems, and mold materials.
    • Participate in design-for-manufacturing and mold design reviews with Tooling Engineering and suppliers.
    • Understand why tooling decisions vary based on part geometry, resin, annual volume, quality requirements, press capability, automation, maintenance, and production needs.
    • Observe applicable mold manufacturing, assembly, sampling, validation, and production support activities.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Work with Product Development, Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Automation, Supply Chain, and Purchasing as applicable to the assigned project.
    • Learn what each function requires from Tooling and how those requirements influence mold design, qualification, documentation, and launch readiness.
    • Capture stakeholder requirements, decisions, and unresolved concerns in clear project documentation.
  • Analysis, Patterns & Lessons Learned
    • Investigate how part design features influence mold complexity, tooling cost, lead time, reliability, maintenance, part quality, and molding cycle time.
    • Identify recurring patterns in design changes, mold modifications, trial results, supplier questions, manufacturing concerns, and validation issues.
    • Document lessons learned using objective evidence from project records, technical reviews, and stakeholder input.
    • Convert findings into practical recommendations, standards opportunities, or questions for future tooling projects.

What You'll Bring

  • Required
    • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or a related engineering field
    • Completion of sophomore year or higher before Summer 2027
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to organize technical information and follow through on project actions.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an office and manufacturing environment.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Preferred
    • Coursework or experience in manufacturing processes, machine design, materials, plastics, or product development.
    • Experience with Solid Works or similar computer-aided design software.
    • Interest in injection molding, tooling, manufacturing, supplier collaboration, or project engineering.
