Forensic Sciences Director – Crime Laboratory Bureau Director

Join the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Division of Forensic Sciences (DFS) as a senior executive. The role will be based at the State of Wisconsin Milwaukee Crime Laboratory Center, a new state‑of‑the‑art facility opening in Spring 2026 that will house a full‑service crime lab with disciplines including DNA, Toxicology, Firearms, Toolmarks, Latent Prints, Crime Scene Response, Forensic Imaging, and more.

Position

Summary

As site Director, you will oversee all operational, financial, and personnel functions of the Crime Laboratory Bureau. Core responsibilities include:

  • Planning, implementing, and monitoring site operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Managing staff across all disciplines, including hiring, performance reviews, training, and career development.
  • Ensuring compliance with ISO 17025:2017 and accreditation requirements.
  • Interpreting statistical data (metrics) to evaluate performance and meet laboratory objectives.
  • Communicating with Division Administration on resource allocation, expansion, and service delivery.
  • Maintaining partnerships with local, county, state, and national stakeholders.
  • Supervising fiscal resources and maintaining financial stewardship.
  • Handling court orders and public access requests related to forensic documentation.
Salary Information

Pay schedule 81, pay range 01. Starting salary: $50.00–$58.13 per hour ($104,000–$120,910 per year), plus benefits. Current/state employees will receive compensation in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 2‑year Career Executive trial period is required.

Job Details

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with ISO 17025:2017 and ANAB or A2LA accreditation requirements for forensic laboratories.
  • Formal supervision and management of staff, including workflow planning, performance evaluation, and hiring recommendations.
  • Formulation or implementation of rules, procedures, and policies.
  • Court testimony experience and public stakeholder communication.
  • Full cycle casework management.
  • Hands‑on experience in a forensic discipline (e.g., DNA, toxicology, firearms).
  • Coordination and relationship building with external stakeholders such as law enforcement and attorneys.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Management of a forensic science laboratory or unit, including budgeting, facility oversight, and fiscal statement review.
  • Leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ongoing partnership coordination with criminal justice partners.
