Overview

Perform a variety of routine clerical, administrative, and technical work in receiving and dispatching routine and emergency information. Keep official records and assist in the administration of the standard operating policies and procedures of the dispatch center.

Responsibilities
  • Dispatch police and other response vehicles for emergency and non-emergency responses; broadcast nature, location, and time of incident. Contact all required personnel and other local concerns such as the fire department in the event of an emergency situation. Ensure the presence of reserve units by contacting personnel designated for on-call and relay information as required.
  • Utilize the department s computer aided dispatch (CAD) system to maintain logs on radio, telephone and computer communications; track location of personnel and equipment; in an emergency maintain ongoing contact with responding personnel and keep them informed of all incoming pertinent information; track traffic lights out, streets closed, etc., and keep emergency personnel informed.
  • Maintain accountability of all officers at all times, for their safety and safety of others.
  • Notify supervisory personnel of any emergency situation or condition that would require reassignment of additional officers to provide for public safety (i.e., notify the shift commander of any major incident or natural disaster).
  • Disseminate motor vehicle, driver license, criminal record information, and monitor TTYs forwarding information to officers as necessary.
  • Monitor telephone lines (including 911) and the radio console (multiple channels) in the communications center, answer all incoming calls, determine the nature of the call, and gather all necessary information to formulate an appropriate police or fire response.
  • Verify and update Criminal Information Bureau (CIB) files when additional information is received regarding a wanted person; check with the originating agency or our file to verify that the warrant/commitment is still valid prior to confirming with the arresting officer/agency.
  • Input data to standard office and department forms, both manual and automated; make simple postings to various reports; compile and tabulate data. Maintain dispatch documents and records.
  • Assist citizens who come into the station to file a complaint, pay a ticket, speak with an officer, obtain open records, or for other reasons by asking perceptive questions and treating them with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities — Process monies for fines, sale of licenses and permits, balance the cash register and forward deposits to the village treasurer.
  • Monitor all security cameras, door alarms and garage doors for building security.
  • Assist in the training of new hires.
  • Monitor all weather warning systems and the 911 phone system.
  • Maintain the communications bureau work area and equipment in clean and working condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education/Experience

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to possession of a high school diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years old.
