Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for performing routine tasks related to the decontamination, processing, sterilization, and distribution of instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies. This role ensures compliance with AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, and OSHA standards while maintaining a safe and sanitary environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, sort, clean, disinfect, and inspect instruments, supplies, and durable medical equipment.
  • Assemble, wrap, and label surgical instruments and procedural trays for sterilization and storage.
  • Operate, maintain, and test sterilizing and cleaning/disinfecting equipment; document usage and results.
  • Identify correct cleaning and sterilization methods for various items.
  • Perform and document biological monitoring of all sterilizing equipment; follow protocol for failed biological tests.
  • Ensure aseptic techniques are used during handling, preparation, and storage of sterile supplies.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment in the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Deliver processed supplies and equipment to designated hospital departments.
  • Assist in Endoscopy reprocessing as needed.
  • Participate in training and orientation of new employees.
  • Report faulty equipment, safety concerns, and deficiencies to Sterile Processing Leadership.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Ability to read and write to comprehend equipment instructions, IFUs, and documentation.
  • Basic arithmetic for instrument counting.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong problem‑solving and communication skills.

Preferred

  • One year of related healthcare experience.
