The Director, Compensation leads the development, maintenance, and administration of all components of the university staff compensation program, overseeing processes such as job evaluations, market surveys, pricing, salary structures, governance, and regulatory compliance.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Lead in the development, maintenance, and administration of university staff compensation policies and procedures.
- Develop and recommend compensation and policy changes aligned with Marquette’s strategic objectives and industry best practices.
- Ensure compliance, internal equity, and external competitiveness.
- Communicate compensation policies, guidelines, and best practices with leaders and employees; develop and conduct training.
- Lead the job evaluation process; conduct compensation reviews using reliable market data to place jobs in appropriate pay grades.
- Collaborate with HR Business Partners on department reorganization; provide counsel on pay practices and policies for hiring, transfers, promotions, and market adjustments.
- Lead or participate as a stakeholder on HR related projects; manage vendor relationships with compensation organizations and system providers.
- Serve as the data steward for compensation-related data and documents; lead market salary studies; analyze compensation data for equity, market competitiveness, and financial impact.
- Serve on the university staff hiring committee; provide support to hiring managers and HR Business Partners in posting positions and creating job templates.
- Provide guidance in time-off administration and accruals; approve and process staff salary transactions.
- Maintain knowledge of compensation best practices and applicable regulations; recommend policy changes; attend training and webinars.
Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources or closely related field.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in leading compensation programs, including job evaluations, salary surveys, and FLSA compliance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with leaders, supervisors, and HR Business Partners.
- Strong communication skills and ability to interpret and analyze complex data to inform decisions.
- Strong experience with compensation software programs and tools, complex spreadsheets, and HR information systems.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws affecting employees and compensation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise judgment, discretion, and sensitivity.
- Ability to set priorities and manage multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Skills and Abilities
- Previous university or other complex organization experience.
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP).
