Interpreters facilitate basic communication between clinical staff and clients or patients, including parents or guardians. Communication may take place in a medical or community setting, providing interpretation, sight translation and/or simple translation on an AVS (After Visit Summary).
Responsibilities- Assist in facilitating communication between staff and clients or patients and their parents/guardians, before, during and after treatment using less complex medical terminology.
- Interpret in a variety of settings (appointments, meetings, examinations, treatment or therapy sessions).
- Provide non-English speaking patients and families with sight translations of medical, social, health care information and other important documents.
- Attend in-services and educational meetings; contribute to assigned committees, task forces, special projects.
- Translate, proofread, edit, and prepare final versions of written materials in the electronic health record (Epic) or MS Word.
- May provide additional down-time support with scheduling, audits, and special projects.
- Demonstrate computer and word processing skills (MS Word), familiarity with tablets and the electronic health record.
- Exhibit strong customer service, communication, listening, and organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
- Medical Interpreter course completion through a Technical School or higher education strongly preferred.
- Current interpreter course enrollment accepted if course completion is within 6 months of hire.
- High School graduate or GED/HSED required.
- Must pass verbal and written proficiency tests with an overall score of 80%, with demonstrated linguistic abilities in medical interpreting and knowledge of the NCIHC code of ethics.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology used in primary care and dental services (e.g., via Medical Terminology coursework).
- National certification must be completed within 2 years of hire (CCHI or National Board) and maintained thereafter.
- Ability to translate and interpret across languages, and to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff.
- Ability to work in various settings including clinics and hospitals, with effective communication to patients and families.
- Attend and participate in ongoing professional development and team activities.
- Interpreter I: requires dual language proficiency English/Spanish and the ability to switch between languages in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting; medical interpreting training/education or work experience required.
- Interpreter II: requires a minimum of two (2) years interpreter experience, preferably in a medical setting. In-house contractors may qualify after full rotation (~12 months).
- We are growing the Language Services team — multiple Spanish interpreter opportunities available.
- Variety of schedules, options for both Full-Time and Part-Time; all roles are benefits eligible.
- First shift start times at 8:00 or 8:30 am; periodic weekend rotation.
- Locations include Milwaukee Main Campus Hospital and Southeastern WI/Metro Milwaukee community clinics.
