OB CRNA role at Aurora Health Care

Base pay range

$97.75/hr - $156.40/hr

Major Responsibilities
  • Provides Primary Anesthesia Care (General, Regional, Monitored Anesthesia Care) to patients having surgery.
    • Provides anesthesia care for surgical cases (24‑hour coverage) including pre‑operative evaluation.
    • Thoroughly evaluates patients prior to surgery to determine appropriate anesthetic technique.
    • Discusses patients’ physical status, significant laboratory findings, and anesthetic choice with surgeon/physician.
    • Performs pre‑operative evaluation on patients scheduled for surgery.
    • Responds to all Code Blue and emergency intubation situations within the hospital and is the team member responsible for intubation.
    • Assists with resuscitation throughout the hospital as needed.
  • Evaluates the surgical patients pre‑operatively.
    • Reviews history and physical examination.
    • Medications and allergies.
    • Previous surgical and anesthetic history.
    • Laboratory, EKG, Chest X‑Ray results, and special studies.
    • Pre‑operative diagnosis, surgical procedure, and type of anesthesia care requested by surgeon.
    • Review of systems and assignment of physical status.
    • Explains the anesthesia and related procedures to the patient, answers questions, and alleviates apprehension.
    • Orders pre‑operative medications/tests if needed.
    • Confers with attending surgeon/physician to determine appropriate anesthetic choice.
  • Conducts an immediate pre‑anesthesia evaluation of the patient in the OR.
    • Monitors the patient continuously, recording vital signs every 5 minutes or less.
    • Notifies attending surgeon immediately of any problems or unexpected reactions.
    • Determines when the patient is stable and ready for transport to PACU.
    • Gives a thorough verbal report on the patient and course of anesthesia to the recovery nurse, assessing initial signs before passing responsibility.
  • Maintains an accurate, detailed, and legible record for each patient in compliance with hospital policy and accrediting organization standards.
    • Records drugs administered (amount, time, route, narcotic waste).
    • Airway management.
    • Fluid/blood administration, estimated blood loss.
    • Vital signs.
    • Monitors utilized: EKG, BP, Temp, Oxygen saturation, end‑tidal CO₂, urine output.
    • Any significant events during the intra‑operative period.
  • Assembles all necessary drugs, supplies, and equipment for anesthesia.
    • Pre‑anesthetic check of equipment function, especially anesthesia machine, suction, laryngoscope.
    • Cleans work areas, keeps them neat and orderly.
    • Orders and stocks supplies for anesthesia services.
    • Reports any malfunctioning equipment to facilitate necessary repairs.
    • Maintains drugs and equipment in the Surgery Department.
  • Provides Pain Management Services as requested by medical staff.
    • Evaluates patients referred to pain management services in the clinic.
    • Provides a plan of care with approval of the referring physician.
    • Administers treatments per plan of care.
    • Provides follow‑up calls to clients.
    • Inserts PICC lines as ordered by physicians.
  • Maintains professional growth and development by:
    • Membership and participation in professional organizations.
    • Attending continuing education programs internally and externally.
    • Staying aware of new trends, techniques, and technology in anesthesia.
Licensure
  • Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Advanced Practice (APN).
Education/Experience Required
  • Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • 2‑4 years experience in anesthesia.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Good communication skills.
  • Computer skills.
  • Knowledge of anesthesia delivery equipment.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • AANA certification in anesthesia.
  • ACLS certification.
Physiological Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Able to transport patients of up to 250 pounds via wheelchair or stretcher; can lift patients with help of equipment and/or coworkers.
  • Able to perform CPR according to American Heart Association standards.
  • Able to stand, stoop, and move around patient care area to effectively accomplish anesthesia nursing.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; for lifts over 35 pounds, use patient‑handling equipment with another associate when available.

  • Promotes a culture of safety by identifying threats and intervening to prevent patient harm.
