Registered Nurse (RN) – Hospice Weekend Field Program
Location:
Milwaukee South Territory, WI 53213
Schedule:
Weekend Program | Every Saturday & Sunday | 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Hospice Home Care / Field-Based (with occasional inpatient support)
The Hospice Registered Nurse (RN) provides compassionate, patient-centered care to hospice patients in the Milwaukee territory, primarily in community-based settings. This weekend-only role focuses on direct patient visits and symptom management and does not include case management responsibilities or a dedicated caseload. The RN supports patients and families during end-of-life care while promoting comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities- Perform daily end-of-life (EOL) visits to assess patient status and manage symptoms
- Respond to PRN visits for urgent symptom management and patient needs
- Conduct occasional routine visits for stable hospice patients as assigned
- Provide skilled nursing care including pain and symptom management using both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions
- Administer medications and manage IV therapies in accordance with hospice care plans and physician orders
- Perform wound care, wound vac management, catheter insertions, tube feedings, and drain maintenance (including Pleur
X and chest tubes) - Manage and monitor PIVs, midlines, and central lines
- Utilize opioid equianalgesic tables and demonstrate competency with opioid management
- Triage patient needs independently while knowing when to elevate concerns
- Educate patients and families on disease progression, comfort measures, and end-of-life expectations
- Accurately document all visits and care provided in the EPIC EMR system
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary hospice team including physicians, hospice managers, educators, and support staff
- Support inpatient hospice care at Aurora Zilber Family Hospice as needed
- Hospice / End-of-Life patients (life expectancy ≤ 6 months)
- Care provided in private homes, family residences, assisted living facilities, group homes, nursing homes, and occasional hospital settings
- Common diagnoses: ~40% oncology, ~60% non-oncology medical conditions
- Field/Remote RN:
- Caseload: 13–15 patients
- Visits: 5–6 visits per 8-hour shift (prorated)
- Inpatient Hospice RN:
- Ratio: 1:6–9 patients (shift dependent)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience
- Exception:
Inpatient hospice (Zilber) may accept 1 year

Accepted - Certifications:
- BLS (required)
- Licensure:
Active state RN license
- EMR: EPIC Hyperspace / Clin Doc or Remote Client
- IV & Enteral Pumps:
- PCA, Alaris, Curlin, Joey, Sapphire (location dependent)
- Medication Dispensing:
- Pyxis (inpatient hospice)
- Hospice pharmacy services for home care
- Equipment pick-up and online training
- EPIC training (average 2 days)
- 3–5 precepted shifts for visit nurses
- Orientation may occur at Aurora Zilber Family Hospice (Wauwatosa, WI)
- Scrubs:

Hospice physician, attending physicians, managers, educators, preceptors, DME respiratory support
