Job Summary

The Electrophysiology (EP) Device Nurse is a practitioner who is uniquely responsible to care for an identified group of complex Cardiology and Electrophysiology patients. The EP Device Nurse will utilize critical thinking to plan, assess, analyze, and care for patients who have cardiac devices including pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders. The Device RN will be expected to assess, interrogate, reprogram, and manage cardiac devices within the nursing scope of practice while working both independently and interdependently with other professional staff, physicians, and other providers across all care settings including ambulatory, procedural, OR, Imaging, Diagnostic, and inpatient departments.

Responsibilities may include maintaining detailed and accurate patient records related to pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders, administering medications, telephone triage, providing patient and family education, coordination of care, and performing, assisting with, and/or monitoring procedures. The EP Device Nurse may also be asked to perform other duties as assigned relevant to the Electrophysiology Nursing Specialty. This EP device Nurse demonstrates competency in delivery of care to a primarily adult population Additional competencies for the EP Device RN may include, but are not limited to, pre- and post-procedure assessment, vascular access, infusion therapy, phlebotomy, post-procedure recovery, care coordination and teach back methods, point of care testing, interrogation, programming, and management of pacemakers, defibrillators, Incision and wound care, Cardiac Telemetry interpretation, and procedure-specific instruments and equipment needed for patient care.

The Electrophysiology Device RN job description has incorporated essential functions which are adapted from the ANA Nursing:
Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition (2010), the AAACN Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Telehealth Nursing, 5th Edition (2011), and the AAACN Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Ambulatory Care Nursing, 8th Edition (2010).

Experience Description

Two years of clinical nursing experience in the field of Cardiology or Electrophysiology is required.

Education Description

Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of education at an accredited School of Nursing in order to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse is required. Bachelors Degree in Nursing is preferred.

Training Description

National certification in nursing specialty preferred.

Special Skills Description

Able to utilize electronic health records and other technology necessary for setting. Able to perform focused or comprehensive nursing assessments in person or via telephone, as applicable to specific practice setting and patient population. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care, resolving patient care issues, and working with patients and their families, often during stressful situations.

Licensure

Description

Requires current state of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a Multi-state Nursing License from a participating state in the NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact). American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required within 90 days.
