The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has a robust Urban Forestry program that supports the management of trees in developed spaces across the state. The program, housed within the Division of Forestry’s Applied Forestry Bureau, works with local units of government, non-profit organizations, Tribes and other entities which are responsible for large numbers of trees near where people live, work and recreate.
The urban forest intern(s) will be focused on data collection and analysis projects, to expand our knowledge of community forests so that they could be more sustainably managed. The work will mostly be composed of different tree inventory projects, but with ample opportunities to learn about the wider forestry and urban forestry fields in Wisconsin.
The position will be based out of the Milwaukee Service Station. The workday will be approximately 8:30a – 5p Monday through Friday, though some flexibility is possible. Most work will be done in and around Milwaukee, though there will be some travel in state for training, networking, and educational opportunities.
Position Duties 60% Urban Forestry Field Work- Identify, measure and map trees in different settings, such as street rights-of-way, parks, and traditional forests
- Prepare tree inventory projects by developing maps and making plans
- Report results in newsletter articles and/or presentations to the urban forestry team and community
- Use online tools and data sources such as the Wisconsin Community Tree Map and the i-Tree programs to enter data and analyze the composition, structure, extent, and ecosystem services of urban forests for communities
- Work with urban forestry staff and partners at educational events with the public
- Travel throughout the state to meet and learn about other Forestry professions
- Participate in conference calls and meetings
- Coursework or professional or volunteer experience related to biology, forestry, urban forestry, or a related field
- Familiarity with mapping programs or software
- Experience communicating technical information for nontechnical audiences
- Ability to navigate varied terrain (e.g., sidewalks, parks, forests) over a work day
- Ability to meet and maintain eligibility to drive a state fleet vehicle:
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
- Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
- Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year
