Evening Circulation Department Assistant
Bargaining unit consideration begins on 12/1/2025 and continues until filled. Applications received by December 26th, 2025, will receive priority consideration.
This position supports the operations of the University of Minnesota Law Library Circulation Department. Scheduled work days:
Monday through Thursday 12:30pm-9pm & Friday 8:30am-5pm. Hours change during semester breaks. This position reports to the Access Services Librarian.
35% Circulation Desk Operation and Department Management Assistance
- Supervise and maintain the routine operation of the Circulation Desk. Manage and close the Library Circulation Desk during scheduled times.
- Staff the Circulation Desk for ten to fifteen hours per week during designated times, and other times as needed for coverage.
- Respond to user inquiries pertaining to Law Library services and policies in person, by phone, and by email.
- Independently determine how to appropriately direct patrons to the Library services, areas of the collection, or other departments that best suit their needs.
- Supervise and help maintain the study room reservations page.
- Respond to patron concerns regarding situations affecting the safety, security, and usability of the Law Library.
- Promptly resolve customer service concerns and relay concerns to other Law Library staff as appropriate.
- Instruct and assist users in the operation of computers, photocopiers, and other equipment as needed.
- Manage patron statistics information and conduct periodical patron counts.
35% Course Reserves Management
- Communicate with Law School faculty, administrative assistants, and the University's copyright clearance unit regarding course readings.
- Locate course readings and past exams and upload these materials to Library course pages.
- Process all print reserves collection materials received from the Technical Services Department.
- Communicate with the Bookstore about required textbooks for law courses and update the appropriate Lib Guides.
15% Departmental Student Employee Management
- Train and supervise Library circulation desk student employees in consultation with the Access Services Librarian.
- Instill the importance of very strong customer service attitudes upon student employees and act as a model of excellent service.
15% Other Duties as Assigned
- Conduct daily walkthroughs of all Law Library areas to assess conditions and note problems.
- Report any facilities issues to the appropriate departments and staff.
- Manage books checked out to journal accounts and deliver books to the journal offices.
- Assist with Library events.
- Assist with the management and filing of the looseleaf collection.
- Monitor the Circulation Departmental email account when the Library Assistant III is absent.
Minimum/Essential
Qualifications:
- High School diploma/GED
- Two years relevant library experience. College education can be substituted for experience on a year for year basis up to one year.
- Relevant supervisory experience
- Relevant customer service experience
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds and push/pull 50 pounds.

- Experience with management of print materials, including looseleaf services
- Knowledge of bibliographic and citation formats
Pay Range: $55,452.80 (Step
3) annually - $64,937.60 (Step 11) annually, depending on education/qualifications/experience
