Assistant Construction Manager - Solar (Minneapolis)

Join Burns & McDonnell as an Assistant Construction Manager focused on solar projects. You will support project and construction management teams in daily operations, including safety, quality, schedule, cost control, contracts, procurement, and client interface.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to company safety programs and collaborate with the team to manage Safety & Health performance.
  • Build client relationships and interface with clients for proposals and project‑related items.
  • Assist in internal and external project risk reviews; consult with Legal Department as required.
  • Coordinate and assist in development and implementation of the Project Execution Plan, Quality Assurance Plan, Safety & Health Plan, Subcontracting Plan, Project Staffing Plan, Organization Chart, and Procurement Plan.
  • Contribute to negotiation, approval, and execution of prime contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and change orders.
  • Develop site mobilization and demobilization plans and support implementation.
  • Secure applicable project permits.
  • Support bidder registration and pre‑qualification efforts.
  • Prepare RFPs, support scope of work development, bid selection, and contract documents for subcontractor and client contractor selection and award.
  • Support implementation of project specifications, drawing releases, and design changes.
  • Execute downstream contract administration (RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, change management, claims mitigation).
  • Support project cost reporting, scheduling, WBS, project set‑up and close‑out, and field progress tracking.
  • Prepare and report project status, risks, schedule, costs, and cash flows; distribute meeting minutes.
  • Support invoicing for prime contracts, subcontracts, client contractors, and suppliers.
  • Establish, review, and implement project documentation and filing systems.
  • Verify insurance, licensures, taxes/duties, and securities of project parties.
  • Conduct safety, quality, progress, and financial audits and assessments.
  • Facilitate material receiving and management, including inventory control and storage.
  • Collaborate with Superintendents and Site Managers to verify subcontractor compliance with contract documents.
  • Facilitate project turnover documentation, recordkeeping/retention, warranty, and close‑out processes.
  • Assist with compliance on all project‑related activities.
  • Assist in developing labor agreements with building trades.
  • Assist with onboarding of craft/field supervision.
  • Analyze composite crew rates and determine labor and equipment costs.
  • Work with field operations/HR to appropriately staff projects.
  • Analyze and monitor labor burdens, classifications, benefits, and labor laws.
  • Maintain accurate craft classifications and progression records.
  • Uphold standards of craft competency and training.
  • Estimate and forecast craft install unit rates, production rates to ensure earned value and cost metrics.
  • Assist with craft training.
  • Manage construction equipment inventory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all company policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of relevant construction experience (or substitute experience).
  • Excellent computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Experience with document control, scheduling, cost control, and project management software preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; strong organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Preferable experience on construction project sites or program management in aviation, commercial, energy, government, manufacturing, oil & gas, process, transmission, distribution, transportation, or water.
  • Basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Must meet company driving requirements.

$ – $ Yearly

Job Details

Field Construction Management – Full‑time, requires travel up to 50% of the time. Position located in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN.
