Faculty Position - Clinician Scientist - Pain (Academic Track)

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Pain Consortium, is seeking an accomplished clinician-scientist working in the field of acute or chronic pain science to join a large, collaborative multidisciplinary community of researchers focused on pain and analgesia research. Academic rank and appointment type will be commensurate with years of experience and accomplishments.

  • The ideal candidate should be experienced in using state-of-the-art approaches with work complementing and expanding on the clinical and/or basic science research already being performed in multiple specialties.
  • Substantial start-up funds and laboratory space are available.
  • This position will include clinical duties working in/at University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.
  • 1.0 FTE
  • The position provides opportunities for collaboration with investigators in the University of Minnesota Health Sciences including the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Public Health. Candidates will have the opportunity to mentor and teach PhD, MD/PhD, and medical students.

    The University of Minnesota is known internationally for pain research and the development of novel analgesic medications. The multi-disciplinary U of M Pain Consortium spans diverse academic units including Anesthesiology, Dentistry, Epidemiology, Medicinal Chemistry, Medicine, Neurology, Neuroscience, Neurosurgery, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Psychiatry, Psychology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Veterinary Science. Our investigators employ a wide variety of techniques including molecular biology, electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, animal behavior, human psychophysics, and neuroimaging.

    Research questions focus on pain transmission, neuroplasticity, hyperalgesia, endogenous pain inhibitory systems, and analgesic medication development. The pain community is well connected with the University's Medical Discovery Team on Addiction, fostering strong collaborations and interdisciplinary training opportunities. There are many opportunities for collaboration between clinicians and basic scientists. Recent initiatives from the Medical School have also resulted in substantial new institutional support for pain medicine within the Department of Anesthesiology.

    This role is dually employed by the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Physicians. Salary at the University of Minnesota begins at $55,000 and depends on academic effort. Clinical salary, aligned with clinical effort, is provided through University of Minnesota Physicians. Total salary is competitive and based on AAMC salary benchmarks.     Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • Candidates must hold an MD, MD/PhD, or DO degree.
    • Graduate of an accredited ACGME residency and/or fellowship training program.
    • Board eligible/certified.
    • Licensed or able to obtain Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Licensure.
    • Ability to obtain/maintain DEA certification in Minnesota.
    • Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.
    • Ability to receive work authorization in the U.S. and maintain legal status according to VISA requirements.
    • Demonstrate a strong record of research productivity.
    • Provide evidence of an established, independent research program with a track record of external NIH-level funding.
    • Current, movable funding is strongly preferred.

    The Department of Anesthesiology comprises over 60 faculty members working in clinical anesthesia, critical care, regional anesthesia, pain medicine, and basic pain research.
