DescriptionHennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking a Lead Tutor for Let’s Read who is passionate about serving youth and families. The position will assist with program hours at Oxboro Library and Pierre Bottineau Library. Let’s Read Lead Tutors manage the delivery of after school reading support for K-5 students implementing a provided curriculum. Let’s Read Lead Tutors are responsible for providing literacy focused academic and social support to students, overseeing the day-to-day program activities, managing the program space and routines, and supporting volunteer tutors.
HCL Let’s Read is a literacy tutoring program that focuses on supporting youth in grades K-5 in improving their reading skills. Students work one-on-one with a volunteer tutor once a week to build their skills, gain confidence and fluency.
Most students who come to Hennepin County Library after school academic support programs are recent immigrants and may be likely to encounter cultural or language barriers as they build their academic skills.
Pay starts at $23.00/ hour

Location and hours: This position will be located at both Oxboro Library and Pierre Bottineau Library. Lead tutors work approximately 20 hours per week during the afternoons and evenings throughout the school year. A list of library locations can be found here:
- Monday and Thursday at Pierre Bottineau Library: 3:30 p.m.
- 7:30 p.m. - Tuesday and Wednesday at Oxboro Library: 4:30 p.m.
- 7:30 p.m. - Saturday at Oxboro Library starting in Jan 2026: 9:30 a.m.
- 12:30 p.m.

About this position typeThis is a limited duration (temporary) part time, benefit earning position expected to last up to two years, with the possibility of extension. This position is internally classified as an Office Specialist III. to view the job classification specification.
In this position, you will:- Provide staffing coverage in case of absence for the Lead Tutors at Pierre Bottineau Library and Oxboro Library.
- Provide lesson support for students if a volunteer cannot attend a lesson.
- Provide orientation, coaching, and training to volunteer tutors.
- Support library community engagement and outreach for the Hennepin County Library after school academic support programs.
- Become familiar with and promote library resources for supporting student academic success to students, families, and volunteers.
- Participate in required meetings and training sessions.
- One of the following:
- Two years or more of office clerical experience.
- 18 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
- One year of office clerical experience and completion of the Human Services Pathway Training Program.
- An approved combination of post high school education and office clerical experience to equal at least two years.
- Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish in addition to English, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience:
- Leading a youth program or working with youth in a volunteer setting.
- Tutoring youth in literacy.
- Working with Hennepin County programs, i.e., volunteering.
- Ability to work with multiple audiences, including children, families, volunteers, and staff members with cultural backgrounds other than your own.
- Familiarity with best practices in tutoring and academic skill building.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
Candidates with fluency in Spanish in addition to English are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual pay and duties.
